I am having great difficulty in finding any information for James Todd and Mary Wilson who were listed in the marraige certificate of James' son Thomas Todd. The marriage was 28/12/1860 between Thomas(Batchelor) aged 21 and Eliza Jane Sommerville(Spinster) aged 20. Thomas address on the certificate was 4 Bright Stree, Glasgow and Eliza's was 5 Turner Street Glasgow. James Todd's occupation was listed as a Labourer but he was also listed as deceased. Jame's wife was Mary Todd(nee Wilson). I can find no definative trace in SP's records.
I have traced full records for Thomas and Eliza Jane but I have not traced Thomas's birth certificate. IGI gives me details of a daughter Mary Jane born in Glasgow to Thomas and Eliza and I know they moved to Yorkshire shortly thereafter.
Maybe I am missing something obvious but have been searching for a couple of years on these two. Any help would be appreciated.

Catherine,

two of the census records 1871 and 1881 do list Glasgow, Scotland.
1861 lists him at Hatfield Street, Glasgow but his birthplace as Ireland and his wife as Jean but I believe this to be an error give their daughter Mary Janes birth and death is registered in SP with the Hatfield Street address. It also appears Eliza's father and sisters were at that same address as well.

I'm slightly confused as the other names on the 1861 census are McKerry and McKennie, not Sommerville.

I am wondering a couple of things

1. His birth was not registered
2. he was born illegitimatley to Mary Wilson
3. Mary Wilson marries to James Todd and he takes the name
4. He was born in Ireland
5. i cannot find a Todd/Wilson marriage that matches
6. They never participated in 1841 or 1851 census

Sorry I have tried, but can't find anything remotely helpful

Catherine,
Thanks for your efforts and you have encountered my brick wall. The 1861 census extract also list Robert Sommerville, Father(born in Ireland); Susan and Dinah Sommerville as daughters. Hatfield Street, Bright Street and Turner Street were tenement type blocks in a part of Glasgow known as Garngad which had a concentration of irish people.

A member has kindly responded to me direct and found in IGI records a James Todd b.c1798 married to Mary Wilson b.c 1802 both from Lisnaffify, Banbridge, Down, Ireland. The family group includes three children all from the same area-
William Todd b.c 1824
John Todd b. 11 ESP 1825
James b.25 Mar 1827
I need to trace links to Glasgow to either discount or prove a relationship. I have searched IGI in the same area for Thomas in the same area of Ireland without success.
Once again if anyone has information on this family group it would be most appreciated

Richard,
My grandmother's mother was Dinah Sommerville born 11 Sept 1842 Skipton, Yorkshire. daughter of Robert Sommerville and Mary nee Quigley.
Dinah migrated to Australia 1864 on the "Arabian". arrived Melbourne 12/03/1865.
Her sister Susan migrated to Australia 1863 on the "Maori".
Their mother Mary died 16 Feb 1860 at 5pm at 8 Hartfield St Glasgow. age 55. On Mary's death certificate her parents were Charles Quigley (deceased) shoemaker and Sarah nee Cameron ( dec ). Mary buried at Lighthill cemetery.
Their father Robert died 19 July 1871 at 7am at 3 Huntingdon Place, Glasgow age 65. Informant was son in law Mungo Hall.
Robert's father was James Sommerville, deceased, police constable. mother's name unknown.
There must be another daughter married to Mungo Hall.??
I do have a marriage for Eliza Jane Sommerville age 20 daughter of Robert and Mary. living at 5 Turner St, Glasgow, millworker, spinster. To Thomas Todd son of James Todd and Mary nee Wilson on 28 Dec 1860.
address given for Thomas at time of marriage 4 Bright St Glasgow. He was a labourer, Batchelor.
Mary Jane Todd born 14 Sept 1861 8 Hartfield St Glasgow daughter of Thomas and Eliza Jane.
According to 1861 census Elisa Jane born Ireland, Thomas Todd born Ireland, Robert Sommerville born Ireland Susan Sommerville born Ireland.
I presume Robert Sommerville and Mary Quigley were married in Ireland.
