Surnames Tuffy, Histon/Heston Ireland pre Famine

KJW1975 Report 8 Mar 2010 22:07

My Great Great Great Grandparents Thomas Tuffy & Margaret Histon first appear in the 1851 census they were both born around 1834-35. They appear to have come over from Ireland seperately and possibly met in Stourbridge UK. I imagine they left Ireland in order to escape the famine. From what I have learned it is probable, but not certain that they both came from County Mayo. Any advice on how I could research this further would be most gratefully received.

From their 1855 marriage certificate for Stourbridge I learn that Thomas's father was called John Tuffy and was a farm labourer and that Margarets father was Michael Histon and was also a farm labourer.

My Great Great Great Grandparents eventually settled in Kidderminster, which is where I live today. They had four children including my Great Great Grandfather Thomas all of their children were born in Stourbridge. These were John Tuffy b1862; Margaret Tuffy b1865; Thomas Tuffy b1866 & William Tuffy b1869. Margaret Tuffy Married a Martin Cassidy and moved to Coventry but I have no idea what happened to either John or William after 1891. John married an Amelia Glazzard in 1889, but both he and William disappear after 1891. If anyone could give me some advice on how to trace these two individuals I would be really grateful. I mean it is only 120 years ago and in the realms of things that is not that long ago. The only assumption I can draw is that they emigrated, but where to? I have no clue?

Any help would be really great, I am at a bit of a dead end with this side of the tree, which is a shame as it is the part that interests me more than anything, because my Moms maiden name is Tuffy.

Regards
Kevin

Is this stretching things too far? (I can't see John's birth Stourbridge, but I assume you have found this yourself?)

Hi

Thank you for your reply, I can't believe how many replies I've had already. This is the first time I've used the bulletin board on here. I find GR a little frustrating sometimes, I've sent so many messages to so many people, but I probably only get replies to 1 in 10... but this is much better thank you!

I haven't actually got the birth certificate for John. I just had a look at the BMD on Ancestry.co.uk and I found John Tovey born 1861 in Stourbridge. I know that this is another variation on the name Tuffy. It's quite confusing as there is a family from Kidderminster with the surname Tovey but as far as I am aware there is no obvious connection. I don't think the census entry for Birmingham is the same person as the dates of birth are quite a bit different. The name Joice or Joyce also crops up quite a bit as my Tuffys had cousins with that name (as one of the posts below has discovered).
Thanks again
Kevin

Hi Ann of Green Gables
Thank you for all of you're input. The Tuffeys from the 1881 census are my ancestors. I have found them on the census's from 1851 up until 1901 (apart from John & William Tuffy who both seem to disappear after 1891). It's trying to find the family in Ireland which is proving to be tricky.

I found the entry for John (Jack) Tuffy & Peggy Joyce for Islandeady County Mayo for the registration of John Tuffy b1835 when I visited the library in Dublin a few years back. As you can see from the 1881 census you extracted my Tuffys had cousins called Joice, which led me to conclude that the John b1835 in islandeady was the brother of my Thomas Tuffy. I don't know whether this is enough to reach this conclusion, but i felt it was at the time.

I've added a little more detail about the Glazzard side of the family, although they are not blood relations I'm starting to realize that you have to do some research in a round about sort of way sometimes, in order to find what you're really after. I've always neglected to do this in the past. I suppose thinking about it logically somebody out there could be researching the Glazzard line and might be able to tell me something about my ancestor.

Thanks again for all of the info and advice
Regards
Kevin

Thanks again for all of the leads.

well if you put Glazzard into Search Trees top of this page you might find others researching them - you can then contact the tree owner

Thanks again Ann, you have been most helpful. Do you think I was right to conclude that the entry for John (Jack) Tuffy & Peggy Joyce was my ancestor based on the connection to the cousins, or would you have tried to get more proof before reaching this conclusion?

Kevin...Who were Thomas and Margaret living with on the 1851 Census..?
There appears to be another child Mary born Dec.1855 Reg.Stourbridge ...Death Reg.June 1857 aged 2 ....I would suggest there may be a others born to the couple given their date of Marriage and the d.o.b of the first child you have listed.....

There are dozens of the Tuffy Surname and variations in the Counties. Mayo /Sligo and Roscommon...

KJW1975 Report 10 Mar 2010 20:26

Hi Erin

Thomas was living as a lodger in 1851 he's listed as Tommy Tuffy, there is also a Pat Joyce on the same page, which I think could be an uncle or a cousin, it has Thomas down as being born in 1831, but I have him as being born in 1834 (from marriage certificate), I still tend to think that this is my Thomas though. The family Thomas was living with was called Bourk and they too were from Ireland.

I can't find Margaret on the 1851 census (maybe she wasn't over here by then?).

I never considered that there may be other children, I knew about Mary that died at 2 years old in 1857, but I suppose it is quite a big gap till their next child John Tuffy in 1862. I haven't come across any other children born between 1857 and 1862 and on the 1871 census there is just the 4 children. Other spellings for the name are Tuffey, Toughey, Tuffie.

Thanks for your help, I'm quite overwhelmed at how helpful people have been on this forum, it's great! I've been stuck at this point for years now (I dip in & out of researching it though). I would love to push my research back further than I have already.

Thanks
Kevin

Does anyone know what kind of sources I can use to find traces of my Irish ancestors? I know there was Griffiths Valuation, but I think that this was a little later than I am looking for.

I had thought about getting a name study done, they do them at the Family History centre in Mayo, but I think they are very expensive.
