I have been told my great grandmothers name was Elizabeth. I have done a marriage search between her and my great grandfather which has confirmed she was this person. It confirmed her surname as Hargreaves. However, I know my grandfather had brothers and sisters but I don't know how to get about finding them.

I have searched on FreeBMD and it says that my grandfathers mothers surname may have been either Taylor or Smith and there are no records of a Hargreaves anywhere!

I'm so confused.

Can anybody point me in the right direction to help me find out who my grandfathers siblings were?

Many thanks,

Nicola

What is your grandfather's name and when/where was he born?

Nicola

Nicola Report 7 Jan 2009 20:35

My granfathers name was Albert Turner. He was born in March, 1924. He was born in Kidsgrove I think. Definately in Stoke-on-Trent.

His Father is called George Turner. He was born in 1898.

The only information I have so far about his mother was that she was called Elizabeth. I'm estimating she was born around the same time which is why I'm almost certain the woman I have as his mother at the moment is correct.

These are from transcribed birth registrations. If there were any more it will mean searching the Complete Birth Registrations quarter by quarter and year year year...no quick way.

I've been right through the 1st and 2nd quarters of 1924 looking for Albert Turner with Hargreaves as mother and can't find him :(

Pam

Pam Report 8 Jan 2009 09:23

Yes I did use Freebmd.

There is a family tree on Ancestry for this family it features

Living Turner
Laura born 28 December 1925 died 1 May 2007
George W Turner (think he died 30 december 1967)

Will see what I can find about Albert and check the tree on Ancestry andcome back to you.

Is it possible you have the wrong family ?

Have you purchased Albert's marriage certificate ? This would give father's name and Albert's age.

Nicola

Nicola Report 8 Jan 2009 22:30

I have got my grandfathers original marriage cert. It states that his father was George Samuel Turner.

My grandad was born on 31/3/1924. Still not certain as to where though.

I think this is probably Grandad Albert's birth registration.

If he was born on the last day of March his birth would be registered in the June Quarter.

You would need to purchase this Birth Registration in order to check that it is the right person. It will name both parents.

If you order it....do not put mother's name on the order form.

If great grandmother's name was Elizabeth it is possible that George Samuel and Elizaberth didn't marry

If family can't help then the only place that might be able to is the Records Office for Stoke on Trent.

The George Turner who married Elizabeth Hargreaves was born 5th July 1898 Stoke T.
His father was Joseph Henry Turner and his mother was Eliza Slack.

As you will see from the census entry for George (possibly Samuel) his mother was a widow named Phoebe....I will see if I can find them earlier.
