We have some old letters from the early 19th Century. Some of these are between three Varley sisters. Several names are mentioned Ellen, Ann, Elizabeth and Parthania. My family is from Bolton but they seem to be around Burnley and Skipton. Also Liverpool/Wirral is mentioned. Lonsdale April 17th 1843 There is now a man at our house who is comming (sic) to England and I thought it a favourable opportunity of sending you a few lines without much expense. I have to inform you that there is a man dead by the name of Richard Varley late of Gisburn but has been living at Boskey Bridge in America he had left much property and has died without heir and the executors have been at Clitheroe seeking an heir by the name of Varley but they are not the right Varley's. Varley's of under Pendle are the heirs to the property and it appears to me that there will be very little trouble in finding their registers for they will be either either at Gisburn or Newchurch in Pendle. Liverpool Octr 12 1835 Dear sister Parthania I have taken a house in Cheshire and wish you to return to Liverpool on Thursday next by one of the early trains. I want you to down at Mrs Grey's by three oclock in the afternoon of that day, where I will endeavour to meet you; but should I be unable to do so, you must come over to Mrs Ogilvys by the Seacombe boat. With respects to sister Ellen & her husband I remain your affectionate sister Anne Varley Martin Briscoe |
