Hi everyone - I'm in need of a little help again please!

I'm looking for the wife of Henry Walford, born c1818, died DecQ 1872 Wolverhampton.

I have them in the 1851 census - ref HO107/2018/53/24 - living in Pountney's Fold Wolverhampton. Henry's wife is named as Elizabeth.

I can find them on all the censuses up to and including 1871 for Henry (died 1872) and for Elizabeth up to 1891 - she died in 1893 a pauper and a lunatic (lol) in Wolverhampton Union Workhouse.

What I CAN"T find for the life of me is any trace of them before 1851. On the census, Henry is shown as born in Penn Staffordshire, and Elizabeth born in Wolverhampton c 1821.

I've searched the marriage indexes, and can only come up with one possible bride; Elizabeth FRANCIS. Marriage took place Wolverhampton DecQ 1850 (ref: Wolverhampton 17 430) - so theoretically I SHOULD be able to find either or both in that area in 1841. Brick wall time!

Also - I can't find any trace of birth of either in any parish records or on the IGI.

Can anyone out there shed any light please?

Many thanks

Lynne

PS - I'm ordering the marriage cert as soon as I've finished typing this....

DUHHHHH - I am so STUPID tonight. Why don't I send for their son's birth cert - I have the details and it will confirm his mother's maiden name........

Still need help finding Henry before 1851 though please!!

Hi Victoria

I just checked out that link you gave me - it's definitely the same family. My Henry and his sons are on that tree as well. And to clinch it is Elizabeth as a pauper in the Workhouse - although they are not so forthcoming about the lunatic bit!!!

Anyway, I've sent the tree owner a message, so hopefully he will get back to me, and we can swap info.

Quick query - where did you find the info for Henry's christening? I thought I'd looked everywhere!

Thanks for your help.

UPDATE

I've just received Jospeh Walford's birth certificate - and his mother is shown as Elizabeth Walford formerly COOPER.

So - out goes Elizabeth Francis - and now I need to find a marriage for Henry Walford to Elizabeth Cooper. Back to the drawing board.....

Hi Wilma - thanks for that. I'm going to try and find Elizabeth on the 1841 census - the first child of the marriage was born about 1851, so that marriage you found could be the one.

Will post later if I find anything!

Wilma -

THANK YOU for a fresh pair of eyes - I should have worked that one out for myself....

I have Henry and Elizabeth on the 1851 census right through to both their deaths, and never even considered looking at who they were living with!! I suppose I had got so fixed on her being Elizabeth Francis that the details on the 1851 had slipped by me!

That's solved that little mystery. Now for the marriage....

Merlynne Report 22 Apr 2009 15:24

Just had a look at my 1851 census - should have guessed! Henry is shown as a Relative, and both Elizabeth Cooper and Elizabeth Walford are shown as Washerwoman - must have been a family business!

Off now to collect grandchild from school - then I'll be doing my own washing!! (lol)

Back later to search for marriage.

Merlynne Report 22 Apr 2009 21:45

Hi Victoria - thank you for getting back on the case!! The census records you have are the ones I have - nice to get corroboration!

The birth looks likely - I've been searching as well, and can't find another that's as good a match.

As for the marriage - well.

The only likely marriage coming up for Henry Walford from 1837 through to 1851 is the one to Elizabeth Francis in 1850. So, I've searched for a possible marriage for Elizabeth Cooper to someone called Francis - nothing showing from 1837 onwards.

I'd already sent for the marriage cert of Henry Walford and Elizabeth Francis believing it was the right one - hopefully it will arrive tomorrow, and I can see if she was married before, or even if she was actually called Elizabeth Francis Cooper!! (But wouldn't that be Frances - female version?). In the meantime, if you have any other ideas I'd love to hear them!

Thanks again

Lynne

not having any luck finding them in 1841

Merlynne

Merlynne Report 22 Apr 2009 22:23

Me neither. If Elizabeth was born in 1821, she would have been 20ish in 1841 - so could have been living away from her family as a servant or something. I'll have a look at that now.

Can't find Henry Walford ANYWHERE!!!
