My Mother, Doris ward was born 27/2/1920 in the Old Kent Road. She was the Daughter of Henry Arthur Ward and Charlotte Elizabeth Hall. They also were the Parents of their Son Henry (known to most people as Harry). He was born on the 20/1/1918 and sadly died in 1963. Henry (Harry) was out fighting in Burma during the Second World War and died from Silicosis of the Lungs due the sand getting into the Lungs during the War, at the age of 42. Henry A Ward (My Grandfather) was born in Camberwell 13/4/1891, then moved to Peckham and was brought up there along with his 2 brothers, Phillip, who had 1 Son (also called Phillip, who Emigrated to New Zealand) My Mum's Uncle Phillip also had a Daughter (called Lillian who lived in Downham, Kent). The second Brother of Henry Arthur Ward was called Burt. Burt lived in Streatham, South East London with his wife and 2 Sons (not sure of their names though). Doris Ward's Mother was called Charlotte Hall, whom was born in Queens Street, London 29/1/1889. Charlotte had 4 sisters, Eva, Ginny, Grace and Maud also 3 brothers Bob, Harry and Albert. They were brought up in Clerkenwell, South East London until they were bombed out during World War 2. Two of Charlotte's Brother's Harry and Bob lived in Downham, Kent. My Mum (Doris), does not know what happened to the rest of Her Mother's Family though, after they were bombed out and has always wondered if they married and had children of their own, or if by pure chance there may be 1 or 2 of them still alive. My Grandmother Charlotte died at the age of 36 in 1923 and was buried at Finchley Cemetery, North London. My Mum was 3 years old and Her Brother Henry (Harry) was just 5, when their Mother died. A couple of years after My Grandmother (Charlotte) died, My Grandfather kept His promise to his wife (which was made before she died) that if anything should happen to her, My Grandfather would marry her best friend, so the children had a Stepmother. My Grandfather waited a couple of years before finally going ahead with the promise. In the meantime, Doris and her Brother had to go and live in Rosemary Road, Peckham, with a very kind Auntie and Uncle, so that their own father could carry on working, so as to feed them and keep the house on (which they had lived in prior to their Mother’s death) in Downham, Kent. It was either that or a Children's Home and No way was My Grandfather prepared to put them into a Home. In those day's there were no Government Handouts. Two years after My Grandmother's death, Grandad remarried. My Mum (Doris) recalls a year or two after that, that one Morning there was a knock at the front door and Her Stepmother answered the door to find that two of My Grandmother (Charlotte’s) Sister’s (Eva and Ginny) had come to see My mum and Her Brother but their stepmother sent Eva and Ginny away after a few muffled words and My Mum and Her Brother never, ever heard from their Birth Mothers Family ever again, neither did My Grandad. I really do hope there is a living relative, or a member of their Family who will see this. If so please get in touch, it would be wonderful to hear from you. Many thanks. Sheila. |
