Charles White (1851-1927)

Can anyone give me a lead on the birth of this gentleman? I have his marriage to Annie Long in Chard, Somerset, in 1870, but am having extreme problems finding his birth, and any record of him on the census before 1871, when he gives his birthplace as Chard, where he's recorded as living with Annie and their son, James.

I've seen an invite to his funeral, which has survived from 1927, and gives his age at 75 years. Trouble is, the first Charles White recorded on the birth index in the Chard district was born in 1855 - I've already established that this is definitely NOT my man.

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Do you actually have his marriage certificate? If so does it name his father?

Hi guys. Thanks to everyone who got in touch.

First of all, to Dee. Thanks for the lead on the 1861 census - I'll see if I can follow it up. I'd already got the one for 1871.

Kath - no, I do not have the marriage certificate as yet. I was hoping, perhaps, that someone who already had a copy might be willing to get in touch and sahre the info.

Shirley - that is a very good point re. possible lack of registration. Were that to be the case, I would find myself still up a certian creek until I get the info from the marriage.

Finally, to "Moody Blue", thanks for your effort, but I already had this info - it is only on censuses prior to 1871 that I am having difficulty finding the family.

Thanks again, all.

Update

I've now received the info from the marriage record via another correspondent. Unfortunately, it does not include the name of Charles' father. It gives his place of residence as Furnham which, according to my road atlas, is a small village on the edge of Chard.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I go from here? I've e-mailed the Somerset Archives, but had no response.
