1871 and 1891 Canadian Census'

Linda Rose Report 26 Feb 2010 18:20

I have been trying to find my grandfather, George Alfred White c 1878, in the Canadian Census'. I do not know exactly where in Canada my grandfather was born. I have found some good possibilities by searching for Geroges aged between 3-5 years old on the 1881 census on the www.familysearch.org web site. One of them is a family living in Malahide, Elgin East, Ontario. I know George's father's name was also George Alfred White. There is a horse connection in the family as I know George was a horsekeeper as on my father's birth certificate.
White Family, Malahide, Elgin East, Ontario
George Mar M Eng 44 Drayman C of E
Mary Mar F Eng 34 "
Tom M Eng 17 "
Samuel M Ont 14 "
Sarah F Ont 12 "
Vinna F Ont 10 "
Mary J F Ont 8 "
George M Ont 5 "
Clara F Ont 3 "
Gertrude F Ont under 1 yr "

I would like to find them on either the 1871 census or 1891 census to see if it gives me more idea where in England the parents and Tom originated. Is there a web site where I can access these canadian census' . My grandfather came over to Britain during the WW1 trading horses to the army and remained marrying my grandmother in 1917. Any help would be great as I cannot seem to get over that brick wall that you sometimes hit!

A proverbial needle in a haystack.

If you take out the 2 week free worldwide trail at Ancestry, remembering to cancel the day BEFORE the 2 wks are up,you can try finding him.

ancestry.co.uk

There are many, many ,many of them in 81/91/1901/1911 and each will need to be looked at on the image for possible occupations.

You will probably need the 2 wks and more I am afraid.
sorry.

Thanks I Will look in to doing that but I think I have already used that facility. I do have the lowest subscription free with FTM but not sure if I can upgrade with this.

Thanks again.

Hi Fan...

This looks like the same family from the 1881 census minus a few older children! Does Canada have birth indexes like they do in Britain so that I can find George white's birth certificate?

Regards Linda

I know our Marg (and others) will check in,but I don't think that's your guy in 1881:
Ontario, Canada Births, 1869-1909
Name: Clara E White
Date of Birth: 8 Feb 1878
Gender: Female
Birth County: Elgin
Father's Name: George M White Occ:Drayman
Mother's Name: Mary Jane Atkinson
Roll Number: MS929_32

The initial is firmly an "M".

Hi Maureen

Thanks for looking at least I know which route not to go down! I beginning to think I'll never be able to find George's family.

I didnt think it was either Maureen ,the age is out for Young George and Canada seem to get the ages right better than English on Census.

Dont know about finding BMDs in Canuck land, but there are plenty that do although they seem to be like a policeman when you need one,,,,not around !

Use the links on:
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/genealogy/022-911.009-e.html

It's still worthwhile searching on Ancestry, even if you lack the sub to see full details, as they've got a better search facility.
For 1851, 1901/06/11 use AG to find location, then LAC to get a downloadable image and the other schedules ( in 1851, 1901)
Use LAC for 1881/91.
For 1861/71, there's no images on the LDS pilot search, and you only get individual transcriptions, so it's hard to build the household.
1916 is Ancestry only (but the census is only for the prairies anyway).

Just to point out for others looking:
FreeBMD

WHITE George Halifax 9a 501

Name: Charles White
Date of Birth: 19 Apr 1883

They tried a few times on this-but he's Charles Edward White.

Hi mgny

Thankyou, I will try that web site and see what I can find out.

Thanks everyone else for their contributions.

If I can't find out anything soon I think I'll call it a day until the 1921 census is available - if I survive that long!

Thanks again.

Hi mgny

Sorry - I meant survived mentally, sometimes it drives you crazy not being able to get any clear clues. Four years doesn't seem so long to wait!

Thanks Linda

Hi MaureeninNY

Just an afterthought (after sleeping on it). Can I ask you where you got the bmd for Clara White. Perhaps I could have a look on that web site to see if I can find any George Alfred Whites born to a George (Alfred) White during the period of 1878 - 1882. On the marriage certificate to my grandmother in 1917 they are both listed as 35 years old but I am 99% sure that my grandmother was born in 1878 from an entry on the English birth index although I haven't sent for the actual certificate as I already knew her father's and mother's names and where she was born.

Thanks Linda
