Gt Grandad Whittaker who emigrated to USA in 1890s

My gt grandad Whittaker(Whitaker) emigrated to New York from Colne Lancashire sometime in the 1890s early 1900s. He had 2 children Mary Jane and Fred by his 'partner' Alice Ann Bulcock but he never returned. I am sure he must have married in New York and would like to see if I have any blood relations in the USA. He was born in Colne Lancashire and allegedly was in catering in a big way in the 1930/40s. Unfortunately I don't know his first name but he must have been born around 1868. He did intend to return to Colne around the time of the 2nd World War but died before he could return.

Do I take it that as the couple were not married that the births of the children mentioned were registered in their mothers surname, Bulcock. Where and when were they born?

Edit: Forgive me for saying this but it seems somewhat unusual that you do not know his forename(s) when you seem to know where he was born, who bore his children, that he went to the USA and what business he may have been involved whilst there.

His partner's possible birth could be one of these:

Births Mar 1862 (>99%)
BULCOCK Alice Ann Bradford Yk 9b 8
Births Jun 1864 (>99%)
BULCOCK Alice Ann Burnley 8e 241

You can search NY arrivals at http://www.ellisisland.org there are loads of Whitakers (various spellings) but no Bulcock matching your criteria. Perhaps revisiting your sources may yield a name?

Yes this is the family. They were recorded as 'Bullock' in the 1891 census instead of 'Bulcock'. Mary Jane, my grandmother, did marry a Dionysius Howarth and her brother Fred was killed in the 1st world war. Alice Ann their mother married Richard Haygarth in 1895 and had 3 more children. The reason I know about gt grandad Whittaker is only through stories which have come down through the family. The Bulcock name is quite common around the Pendle area and I have traced my tree back to the 1600s but have not found a definite link with the Pendle withces Jane and John Bulcock. The name Whittaker is also very common in Lancashire which has made it very difficult to trace the right one.
