I would really like to contact anyone who has links to the Whittaker family who ran a Gum and Starch Works in Tempest St., Ashton Old Rd., Manchester in the last half of the 19th century. My great grandmother, Sarah Williamson, married James Whittaker, a gum and starch manufacturer, in 1864 at St.Thomas's Church, Ardwick, Manchester.Their daughter Elizabeth Emma (known as Emmie) was born in1865 at Sarah Ann's grandfather's home in Nether Alderley, but by 1870 Sarah Ann was living in Hastings with Edward Bland, a saddler from Manchester, and James Whittaker started a new family with Sarah Caldow in Manchester. I would love to know what happened, but have been unable to find out. Sarah Ann died in 1885 leaving 3 children:unfortunately, Emmie had died in 1876. James Whittaker's parents were Richard and Hannah Whittaker and James was born in Blackley around 1844. Please get in touch if you have Whittaker connections and can help.
