Morning All

And hello to MEgirl, as Mel & Jane pointed out we are always looking for fresh memories. we keep coming on here to chat as over the years we have all become Pals and enjoy reading about each others family lives, especially great when there's a happy event or a sad event the support from each other has become very important.

Enjoyed my family history meeting last night .
I haven't done any research using the Poor Law yet and after last night information will be interested to see if my ancestors needed to go on the parish, I thought it was just for paupers , but seemingly in Scotland you could also apply if you had an accident at work and could not work for some time, they also may provide money for children's education.

Wet & windy again
I am fed up with this weather , even when the sun comes out there's a cold wind.

Just done some tidying up , I really don't know why I did, Sofia will be down again this afternoon, her mum has her exercise class and then work so Sofia will just mess things up again lol. It's all fun and keeps me on my toes ,

Hope Jane got on alright at the dentists!

FRANK are you ok this morning??

Suns out now and we have had a bacon sarnie and OH is laying the blocks.

My toe has locked up this morning again and I am just waiting for it to release and I am going up the tunnel again. The rabbits have been in there and eaten the lettuces all round the edges but they are cut and come again ones so should be ok in a little while.

Well here goes with some memories! I can remember going to the Day Nursery when I was about three and waiting for my mother to come and fetch me at lunchtime, one day a week I had to stay there all day and I can remember having a rest on a camp bed, I can remember being put into a seat on the back of her bike, and not enjoying it very much! I remember standing in one of those climbing frames and not being able to climb, and, yes you've got it, crying!!!! I can also remember my mother and stepfather's wedding, and my Granny standing me on a pew so that I could see, I was 4 then,it was just after that awful winter of 1946/7, and I can remember the snow and the cold vividly as we were living in one room then with a thimbleful of gas and I was told to rub my hands as it was SO cold. I can remember lots of things before my mother married again, but not so much afterwards, I guess that once we settled things were less dramatic, and didn't make a particular imprint.

Going to have some smoked salmon later. So no bacon sarnies.

Will go out and do the watering soon, then pack my little overnight bag. Ros needs a SUITCASE and the back seat of the car for her skirts/trousers/tops I don't know where she thinks she's going and for how long. lol lol :P :P :P

Shutting down now, so I can pack the pooter.

See you from Rutland later.

I had brown lino in my bedroom when I was small and a mat beside my. It was so cold to step on when you had'nt anything on your feet.

Later I had a carpet in browns and greys that looked like small crazy paving. Hated it but it did go over most of the floor.

We had runners of carpet in our hallway with about 5 inches of lino showing either side and that was polished with red polish.

Frank do be careful while you're away, you sound a bit accident prone at the moment!!!! I hope you enjoy your stay, and get back to us safely! Jane, how did the dentist go, the whole thing sounds HORRID and as Frank would say, 'more expense' Raining here off and on, so drying washing in the Greenhouse!!

MEgirl

MEgirl Report 13 May 2011 12:46

Hello all and thank you for the warm welcome. Yes, Frank I think I qualify for your harem - 54 next month. I'm from the Central Coast area of N.S.W., Aus. Most of my ancestors are from the West Country where I last visited in 1983 with my first ex half. He is from Yeovil, Somerset if any of you are familiar with that part of your lovely country. Have quite a few Scots, Germans, French and Danes making up the rest of my tree.

I hate dentists, needles, brussel sprouts, cockroaches and other crawlies - yes and I do come from the worst place for them. My house backs on to a reserve and we get lots of spiders, the odd snake, large lizards and beautiful birdlife. I usually put pieces of apple out for the possums in summer, but the bush rats get there first and eat the lot.

There's been a cold snap here and quite a bit of snow has fallen in the mountain regions. It was beautiful and sunny today, but chilly tonight so the electric blanket will be on. I have been to the UK in winter, never saw snow which was disappointing for me. Lots of memories will flow and I look forward to getting to know all of you.

My OH is Keith and I have son Joel and daughter Miranda. I'm Kim or Lizzie as some people call me.

Cheers all.

:D

Afternoon All,

Hope jane got on ok with that tooth! The worst should be over now.

Fiona I have always found having a man in the house has the same effect with mess!! lol Unlike little ones who want their toys all out, my OH is very tidy, but mucky fingermarks on lightswitches, doors, spills and drips in the kitchen,....you name it!! He just walked in in his muckiest gardening gear with dust, soil and sawdust all down him and started slapping his front!! lol, lol. I rest my case!! lol He has got half of one tree down, but the electric saw has broken, looks like screws have sheared off?? I have managed to find one the same online for under £40 so it isn't worth trying to get it repaired. I don't envy him telling his dad it is broken even though he's replacing it with new......very particular about his tools!!

Hi MEgirl, nice to see your memories.....keep helping us out with more.

When I was little, I had a reddish lino on my bedroom floor and just a mat at the side of the bed. The living rooms had big carpet squares with about 12 inches of stained floorboards around the edges. The kitchen had small red tiles on the floor and a square table to sit at with patterned oilcloth on the top. No furniture was built in then and there was a kitchen wall cupboard with frosted glass and sliding doors. I seem to remember our knives and forks had cream coloured handles, not sure whether it was plastic or bone.

How interesting to live in Aus Kim (I'll call you Kim if that's ok as we have a 'Liz' ). The trees we are chopping down are australian cordylines or cabbage palms I think they are also called. They were about 15 feet tall, but the last winter here finished them all off in the midlands where I live. I had a cousin who emigrated to Australia but don't know where to. I also have a couple of ancestors where were transported!! We've been having glorious weather here lately, all the trees and shrubs are in blossom. What birds do you get where you live? We have colonies of parakeets settled in the south. I wouldn't like the snakes or creepy crawlies!! lol

Hope you enjoy your weekend Frank and have a nice relax after those falls. Us ladies are all the same when it comes to packing!!

Jane Report 13 May 2011 13:27

Well that wasn't as bad as I expected. No injections!!!!!!.Mind you there were a couple of times I nearly hit the ceiling lol.My tooth (what is left has been cleared out and repacked again and I now have a temporary crown.Dentist now wants to leave it undisturbed for a couple of months,as he doesn't want the risk of reinfecting.
I'll call you Kim too ,as Ann says we have a Liz.We also have another Anne.

Oh doorbell! I think it could be Fitz lol
Safe journey Frank and Ros

Hi to Kim, it's always nice to have someone new as it does get us back on track again. I remember both mum and dad worked two jobs to buy the house I grew up in so that me and my brother could have a bedroom each, and all I wanted was to sleep in my brothers room ....lol

Don't anyone tell Frank it's Friday the 13th, goodness knows what calamaties he'd get into. Hope he has a good weekend. I shall be Nana again, getting quite an old hand now, already have a 19 year old grandson and a 14 year old granddaughter and Finley who is 15 months.

I will try another photo Ann, but everyones seem a bit small or not very clear, just wondered if they could be enlarged before they go on here.

TV License just come through £145.50, don't know what they spend our money on, certainly isn't decent TV. :P

Hi Kim and welcome. Interesting to hear that you come from NSW. I have two cousins living in Aus. My cousin Miranda has lived there since 1970, she went out on an adventure trip, met and married her husband and stayed! They lived in the Blue Mountains for many years, but now live in Brisbane. My other cousin Camilla, went out to Aus with her hubby in 1992, and they live in Melbourne. We all come from Oxford, although our family originally came from North Somerset. I've lived in Somerset for the past 19 years, near Minehead. My two children and three Grandchildren still live near Oxford which is now proving to be a bit too far away, so we HOPE to be able to move closer to them in the none to distant future, that's our plan!!! Glad the Dentist wasn't too bad Jane! the rest of it should be pretty straight forward now!

Jane Report 13 May 2011 17:33

Lino!.I can't remember which rooms ,but when I was a tot there was red lino with black and yellow splodges.I think that might have been the kitchen. Then a black lino with red and white splodges.I think that could have been in the hallway.I seem to recall on oilcloth on the kitchen table which I think was brown.I had a little mat by my bed which was cream and pink .It had frayed edges and my name Jane was in the middle.Another present from this man I called Uncle Bill.He also bought me my little wicker chair which Big Ted sits in,and a string of pearls that I wore on my wedding day.He was no relation to me .I never could quite understand why he bought me all those wonderful presents.I think my Aunty Betty lived in a house he owned.I do remember visiting him in his big house in Bideford. He always looked like that chap from the Adams Family.Black slicked down hair ,parted in the middle lol

My temporary crown feels a bit funny, but the dentist says it should bed down a bit more, and should level out with the rest of my teeth.I will probably not notice it in a few days.It just feels a bit like a foreign body at the moment.

It was Fitz at the door earlier. He is having a stressful time at the moment with his Mum.I think it is time he thought about his Mum going for respite care now and again just to keep him from cracking up.

I hope you stay with us Kim!
I grew up in the West Country.Plymouth.I live in the Midlands(east) Kettering. Not that far from Ann and Frank. It is nice to hear about the different wildlife you have out there. My neighbours often have snakes in the summer. But they are just the normal water/grass snakes.I'm not sure I would be very comfortable with your snakes, spiders and other creatures, but I suppose it is what you get used too lol

I feel a bit chilly now .Think is time to shut the back door.

HI Kim I was ten when my best friend with her family emigrated to Brisbane she was called Cynthia Jolly and lost an eye when some boys threw a stone at a glass bottle. I cried for weeks after they set sail for Australia then several cousons went to Melbourne and my nephew Andrew married a Australian girl called Donna and they have a daughter Emily. All went on the then ten pound passage. that was about 1949 and then my mums friends daughter went. I do not keep in touch with any of them only my nephew and he is saving his money for the olympic games to come over my brother is going to visit with him at the end of the year. I think the second time and he was not amused about the spiders last time
telling a story about a huge spider in the toilet that chased him. Of course Andrew and Donna went much later.

Hi everyone thank you for saying you thought me funny .My stories are true and I do not mean to be funny just know some funny people.
Shirl am I really better than telly that does not surprise me really I can never find a lot to watch here. Although the Apprentice is back and I love that.

Anyone watching the Euro Song contest. Jedwood did get in with Lollipop
and there aunt who lives near us was celebrating today with big posters all over her house. I saw them get into the euro last night and the song was good a nice cheerful tune. it had some bad comments though.
With Blue favourite of mine it might be a good night will be fixed though I ask. political.!!!

Was going to visit Beryl today she wanted to visit her three sisters but Beryl
fell on one of her wash balls and sprained her ankle the same one she did last time. Anyway they ended up visiting her and I popped over .All women looked alike and Donnie was horrified he said there is three other Beryls in the lounge I shall go mad . They all planted kisses on his face and he disapeared.

Today I went outside the shop and there was a shopping trolley outside
someone had borrowed and not taken back. Donnie came home with me in a van and he took it back to the supermarket but he took it back to one that does not have trollies however it can stay now I am saying anything only that pillock could take it to a supermarket with no trolleys.

Mel I will let you know when Jess does have her baby.
Nigglie I am glad your ho is alright now after his treatment I did say he would be.It is wonderful what they do these days.my brother is still fine after his cancer and he seems more active these days. i mean he does a lot of cricket.

i was pleased with the paper chase that I was able to take part thank you Jane and Fiona I guess every little helps the charity.Mandy i hope you are keeping ok.

Amanda have you got your pool out yet or is it too cold and windy like here.

David my brother had a car with a rear windscreen wiper then one without one and he really missed it. He was out in his red Austin eight today
and a cow dented his bumper oh my gosh did he go mad. The farmer said he was sorry and said if Neil sent him the bill he would pay for the damage. Neil will challenge these farmers let me by sort of thing and some of the cows will not move.

I am taking a old lady out to dinner this evening she is 86 and lives on her own and loves chinese food but we are not going to much later I am a bit worried about eating so late but Elsie is so thrilled to be going out

Jane, glad it wasn't to bad at the dentist , is James better ?Poor Fitz , does he get any help with his mum ?must be a bit embarrassing for him to have to do personal things for his mum.

No pool filled up yet Sheila , its to cold !! we might do it at the end of the month .
Really chilly here now ,have watered outside , still no sign of any rain here, even though there were plenty of black clouds .
