Morning everyone, bit drizzly for a change here, might cool me down a bit. This remembering lark has got me hooked now, good for my ageing brain cells methinks. I was thinking of all the things we enjoyed in the way of home entertainment before these days of multimedia, mobile phones, TV Dvd's et al. I used to love the radio when I was a boy and for a laugh would listen to ITMA (Its That Man Again) with Tommy Handley. A couple of the characters I recall were Mrs Mop ("can I do you now sir?") and Fumpf (Fumpf has spoken). For adventure it was Dick Barton, Special Agent - with his trusty sidekicks, Jock and Snowy. For detecting it was Paul Temple and his wife, which had a lovely intro tune. Scaring me to death was Valentine Dial as The Man in Black. I remember one was all about the room with the yellow allpaper, and that night I was terrified to go to bed! On a lighter vain, afternoons home from school we had Childrens Hour with Uncle Mac - plus of course jolly goings on with Just William by Richmal Crompton, and his ever ongoing pranks with his mates (Ginger was one) while all the time trying to evade Violet Elizabeth Bott, who spoke with a lisp. I also loved the Saturday Night Theatre plays, and would lay one our settee until I felt myself drifting off to sleep. I often felt I wish I could be transported up to my bed without moving. (That's one thing that hasn't changed with me!!!) Saturday mornings were for the kids cinema Clubs, I belonged to the ABC Minors and a similar one at our Gaumont at Chadwell Heath. We had a badge and sang our song at the start of every show ("We come along, on Saturdays mornings, greeting everybody with a smile" etc etc) There were great Westerns, (we thought so then anyway) Roy Rodgers and his horse Trigger - Hoppalong Cassidy. For comedy there was Bob Hope, Bing Crosby and Dorothy Lamore in the 'Road To' series of films. On a more subtle note was the humour of Jack Benny and his faithful coloured servant Rochester, with his hoarse voice. That's all for the time being folks, my wife is calling that it's time for breakfast. You all have a nice day now (I pinched that bit from an American film!) Stay positive and I'll be back soon to see if your all behaving yourselves. William

Morning All.
William I remember some of the radio and Tv programes.
I remember listening to listen with mother at 1.45..I used to drag my chair up to the wireless to hear better,That was the time my dad went back to work after his lunch hour..
I also used to go to the Odeon on a sat morning..Remember people boo-ing when the film broke down...People in the galleries where bad they had pea shooters up there and also spat on you. It was safe to go into town those days on your own on the bus...
Well I have been up from 5.30..kept waking up.. Did a few things downstairs like puting 8 jigsaw together and reboxing..Just couldnt be bothered last night. I had anice time with the grandchildren yesterday.took a picnic to the park..so hot but it didnt stop the boys playing footie.. Saw the clouds looming then started for home... we all ate an icecream on the way back.. except for the 5 year old who wanted sweets, My granddaughter is 13 and a half and her brother 10 then their half brother 5..It is the 5 year old that is moving to Paris on the 26 for 2 years.. with my son and his partner..They had to fly out yesterday for a meeting with Bos*h who he works for and to try again to find somehwere to live or else they will be put up in a hotel until then.. We got caught in the rain ..nice an cooling but we missed most of the storm our way..about 10 miles away they were flooded.
I am waiting for the plumber to arrive to put the bathroom back together. but at 7.15 the painting firm arrived did a couple of odd jobs they are now waiting on the plumber too..I just managed to wash myself in the kitc hen sink before they arrived...then when they went off to collect something I managed to wash hair there as well. I have a hosp appointment at 2 so it is all go..I am also waiting for a charity firm to arrive to collect a Welsh dresser thats not needed anymore I will read though your posts and try to be back soon

Morning William and all,
Drizzly here too this morning. It started to rain last night quite late adn has'nt stopped since. OH is not amused as he has the roof off half the garage.
William I remember my dad talking about those radio programs. I used to listen to Listen with Mother in the afternoons when small.
We had a caravan at St Osyth on the beach there and a transistor radio in a small suitcase type thing that ran on batteries. Dad always listened to the play on a Saturday night in bed while we were there.
Did Hancock's Half Hour start on the radio? Dad also said Fumpf has spoken so he must have listened to that too.
Frank nice to think that Ros has had something to eat, never mind that it was somewhere else but you did'nt see how much she ate of it. Did you see my post about getting her some multi vitimins??
Hope kim is getting over her trip out now and is feeling a bit more like herself. Sending you my love............. <3
Pat how are things on the decorating front today. You must be nearing the end now so that you can get straight again. Glad you are pleased with the bathroom.
We played lots of games when I was young, snakes and ladders, ludo and when older monopoly. Card games too with an ordinary pack of cards or the Lexicon ones. Domino's with grandad and we had a shove halfpenny board that was grandads which I loved playing with him. Also a huge pin ball game I once had for Christmas with all the pins in it and you had to ping a ball bearing up a shoot which bounced around the pins scoring points qwhen it got stuck in one of the pinned areas. Jigsaws or course too.

He was drying it and......'it slipped out of his hands'!! how stupid can you be, I've told him 100 times to do things like that over the table in case, or, better still, let me do it!! He was trying to help! Oh well,The road road to Hell etc etc! today is VERY wet and the pigeons are holding up their wings, either to have a bath or shelter, I' not sure which! Nothing much on today, just pickling around!

Morning everyone. I loved Listen with Mother.I think I used to sit in my little childs wicker chair.(The one made by the Blind) I was given it when I was about 2or3 .I loved it,and still do.My Big Ted sits in it now.I think Ann saw it when she was here. I only went sometimes to the pictures on a Saturday.I think I had riding lessons on that day. Also I lived about 8 miles from Plymouth so it wasn't that easy.
What a sight this morning when I looked out the bedroom window.A Hawk had just brought own one of our Wood pigeons and was plucking away at the feathers. The sad thing was that just all standing alongside was the pigeons mate and another pair.I couldn't believe it to just see them watching. Then the I think I disturbed the Hawk and it flew down the garden with it's meal. The pair of pigeons flew away and it was just the lone one left all by itself looking at the mound of feathers. It stood there for quite a while and then waddled off.Boo! Hoo! I had a look later and there are 3 piles of feathers. The Hawk must have been moving around with it.5 will have to go and pick up all the mess now. :-S :-S

Pat it sounds like you had a lovely time with the children yesterday.Good job you didn't get caught in that dreadful rain. It is thick drizzle at the moment and it was nice picking the veg just now as it was so refreshing on my skin.I think I will nip out soon and get a few bits just in case it is so bad later. James is busy on the phone trying to find out when he will get the deposit back from the rented house in Canterbury. The company are knocking £70 off each persons deposit.Which I actually think is not too bad as they had the house for 2 years. They are taking too long though to pay up :-S :-S :-S

Hi again,
Ros is back, The Doctor at Woodlands wants her back Monday afternoon for an MRI. He is allowing an hour, instead of half hour, so he can check everything.Seems to be very thorough, Jan liked him. He explained everything in simple words, She will come and collect Ros again on Monday. Ros had a slice of toast when she got home, and looks a little better in herself.
I don't know about a drizzle, it's throwing it down here.
Saturday was very enjoyable in our household as a kid. Sat morning pictures, sat afternoon in the winter was either playing or watching football, tea was often souced herrings, with loads of bread and butter. Bath night, the the radio, Sports report, in Town tonight. some comedy then Saturday night Theatre. Scared the life out of me most of the time, and frightened to go to bed.

Hello everyone,
Sorry to hear about all the injuries. Mandy and Frank take it easy. Frank really good that Ros had a meal at the hospital. I hope they can work out what is happening with her. Good that you had a few drinks yesterday with friends.
Mel I would love to watch bell ringers. It looks very strenuous to me. Thanks for those good vibes; grabbed them with both hands :-) I helped OH clear out more rubbish from the garage today for the kerbside collection. Garage still looks very "busy", but getting there bit by bit. Need plenty of room for this 21st coming up in September. Oh the thought :-S :-S Found another 6 boxes of books to go through. I think some will have to go the Salvos or a secondhand book shop.
Also planted my sick looking Princettia in the garden with topsoil and some good fertilizer - hope all that gives it strength!!!! Weather has been warm another 25 degrees today, but forecast of heavy rain and winds to come again soon. Will try to sell a small hallway table on e-Bay when OH gets the information on there for me.
Pat you had a good day with the grandchildren while the workmen did their thing. Hope they have a productive day - is it the plumber today?? I can't go and re-read everything or I will lose the lot.
Annx thanks for the pics. Our magpies are a lot bigger and fatter than yours, but just as nasty. I love that little squirrel!!!
Hello to Foggy - I'm from Aus. so don't have all these wonderful memories, but I can remember listening to "Greenhills" a radio programme that started back in the 40s/50s. It continued for a long time.
I loved the Road To ..... movies, used to watch them as a kid with mum and dad. Dorothy Lamore was a stunning lady.
Shirl I did search for that information for you, but couldn't find anything, sorry.
Glenda was in tears today. Rod has a beautiful 1999 navy BMW which he loved. A present he bought himself when he retired from the police. Well, they have found someone to buy it - someone who loves BMW's and has had a few in their time. Will be going to a good home, but sad just the same. I had a teary day thinking of him. Two months next week, how fast time goes.
Jane my dog Zoe used to love ice in her water, then she would flop around the shaded side of the house, but the silly cats lie in the sun in scorching temperatures. Had a cheeky Willy Wagtail at the window this morning stirring up both cats. Did he put on a show for them ;-) I thought they would have a fit trying to get at him. What a fuss!!!!!
Hello to everyone else. Liz I can't remember my grandparents birthdays, but dad's mother would be 125 this year. She was a classy woman!!!
Good to know Maureen is fine.
Off for a cuppa and tv. Have a safe and happy day everyone.

Afternoon everyone,
Well it started off here with a fine drizzle ,now its tipping it down ,still muggy though. Slept quite well last night ,side was really stiff when i woke up, but its much better than yesterday .
Love all your memories William, keep them coming ,i carn't remember going to the cinema when little , i do remember listening to Listen with mother ,use to sit on mums lap and have a cuddle . And i was told that when it was time for Andy Pandy to say bye bye on the television i would always cry ,don't remember that either !!
Glad to hear that Ros has had a little some thing to eat , sounds as if the doctor is going to give her a thorough check as he's allowing extra time for the appointment ,she's probably relieved to think that they are going to do some thing at last .
Poor Glenda Kim, it must be a little comfort for her to know that the car he loved will be going to some one who will love it too.
So the Gas Man comth then Fiona ,lol ,what a shame the weather has changed ,if it had been nice you could have sat out of the way in the garden , i suppose they'll be in every room as your having all new radiators !!
Good to know Maureen's ok.

Still not chucking it down here Frank.Just persistant (sp) heavy drizzle.Still muggy. I spent so long with James setting up Eb** to put madams car on.I got sooo het up it was making me feel sick.I have never bought or sold anything this way before .I am still not sure what happens next lol. We had a little Robin in the house earlier.I don't know how it got through the chain fly screen.I got a pic of it sitting in the back porch,on top of some spray cans on the table. It was so cute.
Chris is just setting up the new phone. He is a right Mr.Grump because of the rain.He doesn't get a lot of time free and wanted to get out in the garden. The weekend doesn't look too brilliant either.
It seems that Ros has had a good Dr Today Frank.Sounds like he is taking things seriously and she isn't being fobbed off.
I don't believe it!!!!!.......I just managed to pull the big window shut as a Blackbird was trying to get in!!.What is it with the Birds today :-( :-(
Glenda must feel so sad at selling the car Kim .But as you say it has gone to someone who is going to love it.
Fiona ,your kitchen will look so much bigger now without that monstrosity lol You won't know yourself. Cuppa time now BBL

You've got the right idea Jane. Yes Violet Elizabeth was the one who said (something like) I'll Squeem & I'll squeem (scream) until I'm sick, well done, I'm not the only one in 'that old' bracket then! Millymollie, you are obviously only a 'youngster' if you remember Watch with Mother on TV. The first I watched a TV was the Queens Coronation. I was home on leave from the RAF and went across to a neighbours house to watch it on their TV (probably the only one in the street). I'll always remember that I hadn't to sit in 'Mr Smith's chair'. You actually called your neighbours Mr & Mrs in those days. The set was one of those bakelite jobbies, with about a 10 inch screen, you wouldn't even make a fish tank out of one these days. Black and white of course so I think we all ended up boss eyed. I wonder what comics you all read back then, or anytime you were little. My favourites were the Beano (still going), Dandy, Film Fun, and my brother let me borrow his Hotspur (although there were too many words and not enough pictures for me). We used to have the Picture Post magazine too, Dad liked to look at that as he smoked his packet of 5 Wild Woodbines. He always was a glutton for punishment. That's it for now, I think the grey matter has conjealed for the time being. Here's hoping you all have a good (and dry) day. Cheers me dears - William

William, I read the 'Just William' books when I was a child, together with 'Jennings' Biggles' Mallory Towers ( a girls book) Billy Bunter, Swallows and Amazon, so on and so on! I was born in Jan 1943, so I don't remember the War, but certainly from about 1947 onwards. That sticks in my memory as my mother re-married in April of that year, (she was a war widow, my father was killed in Dec 1942) which was one of the best things she ever did, my Stepfather was a lovely man, and when she met him it was certainly our lucky day as life had been a bit uncertain up to then. Fish for supper, must 'get on'!

I was a 'Bunty' reader William.I do remember loving the comic strips in one of the papers my Parents had.I can't remember which now. I had an Annual every Christmas.Rupert Bear I think was one I had several of.
Shirl as for birds .I love them ,but have had enough of their antics today lol I wonder what has happened to the Pigeon whose mate was murdered. It might have to join a 'Singles Club'.
Well I still can't see Hannah's car on Eb**.How long does it take for them to put something up?I hope we have done everything right. Have had a few very heavy downpours now, which I'm sure has done the garden a world of good. I might get the 'bug ' and start selling things!!!!.I think Hannah can do her own selling from now on!!!.I think I do enough for her :-(.That makes me sound awful doesn't it.When I look and see what people do sell I'm sure I have plenty of things that I could get shot of.
It looks like it might be clearing up outside now. I forgot to ask earlier .How are all the pulled muscles and strains?Easier I hope. I better think about putting some dinner in the oven.I can't believe I have spent nearly all day doing the Eb** thing :-S :-S

Liz, I'm so pleased that you think so highly of your step father, what a bonus. I'm a step father myself and like to think I've been a good one. I do have two children of my own (grown up & with families of course - and I love them all dearly). I just think of it all as one big extended family and I've got enough love from all of them. We are onto our great grandchildren now (two) and it's just such a pleasure for me. Due to the war etc, lack of longevity in times past, I hardly remember any grandparents and always feel I've missed out. At least as I type this and do my family tree at the same time, I know things will be different (if complicated!) for them all in times to come. Tracey, have you always lived in Canada? If so I wonder how you understood what Old Mother Riley said (was it Lucan McShane who played her?). Liz, you're a day early with your fish, it's Friday tomorrow!!! It's grill here and guess who's cooking it..... Catch you all soon.
