SuffolkVera Report 3 Jul 2025 19:39

Good evening ladies (and gentlemen if any are looking in)

Oh dear EOS, you did make me laugh with your small myopic tortoise. When I read that I immediately thought of a tiny model I have of an elderly tortoise with a hat and wire spectacles. Well actually it’s a turtle but looks like a tortoise and it may be male but from now on it will be known as Elizabeth. I bet in real life you’re a svelte, beautiful blond model.

Annx, the system of 10 minute appointments and only one problem discussed has always seemed stupid to me. I understand the need to have some time limit on appointments and I know it’s possible to book double ones but how can you only discuss one problem as aches, pains, illnesses are often inter-related. A doctor once told me that he often only finds out what a patient has really come about when they are on the point of leaving. Our OHs are very similar aren’t they? Mine has a talent for leaving stuff all over the place. It’s often his glasses though I am hoping that may get better now he only has one pair of reading glasses to worry about. I also remember running after a bus on Capri. It had just started moving off when I noticed that OH no longer had the jumper he was carrying when he got on the bus. I managed to attract the driver’s attention and he stopped so I could recover it but OH wasn’t popular that day.

Mel, I am so pleased you still have Spotty and now you’ve got another 5 swallow eggs as a bonus. Enjoy your meal with Stu tonight.

It’s good that you had a better night Mandy and I hope the tablets are doing you some good now and the better nights continue. Just don’t be tempted to do too much. You must give your knees time to recover before you start putting any pressure on them.

You’re getting on with the gardening and watering AnnG. I’ve done no gardening again. OH used the watering can to do some pots and troughs in the shade earlier but I see he has now laid the hose out so he’s obviously planning to do some watering this evening. It’s a shame about the fuzzy sound when you saw the film. When our little local theatre has a screening the audience are often on the elderly side. Whoever does the sound seems to be under the impression that anyone over about 60 must be completely deaf and the volume is always much too high. I enjoy the films but invariably leave with a headache. Did the film or someone at the cinema say that Moth had died? I was surprised that I hadn’t seen even a small paragraph in the papers so I did some googling. What a confusion. I found stuff from April and May of this year where Raynor is talking about him as though he is alive and then I found an obituary for him in 2021. Lots of people had asked on different forums if he was still alive but no-one seemed to have a definite answer.

It was a lot cooler last night and I expected to sleep better but I still couldn’t settle and read for quite a while in the early hours. When I got up I decided I’d better make the most of it being a bit cooler and get some h/w done so the top of the house to the bottom of the stairs got a thorough vac and dust.

By the afternoon the temp seemed to have settled to a steady 23-24 degrees and we went off to our strawberry tea. As our friend V always sells plenty of tickets to our group the organisers always put up a big table and canopy for us and put a Reserved notice on it. Today there were 12 of our group and we made room as well for a couple of ladies who were on their own. V is so pleased that we all support him that he’s got into the habit of bringing a couple of bottles of fizz with him (non-alcoholic as we are all in cars). One of the organisers brought a tray of cold drinks round to us which was very welcome, then V poured us all some fizz. There was a duo playing music and a couple of quizzes on the tables for anyone who wanted to have a bit of fun. It’s held in a village hall and the food is all served in the hall though our tables are all set out on the grass in front of the hall. Today the first course was quiches and sandwiches of all kinds, sausage rolls and bits and pieces like crisps etc. You just take a plate and help yourself to as much as you want. When everyone has had their fill, they clear the food tables and re-lay them with the strawberry bit. There are bowls of strawberries and jugs of cream, pavlovas, gateaux, scones spread with jam and cream and topped with a strawberry and plain cakes and shortbreads etc for anyone who doesn’t eat strawberries. Tea and coffee as well, of course.

There are dozens of raffle prizes so instead of calling out numbers and it taking forever, numbers are drawn while we are eating and tickets taped to prizes and set out on a long table. Then you can have a look yourself and if you have a ticket that matches one taped on a prize, that’s yours. We got a £10 voucher for a big farm shop and restaurant with a farm trail etc for kiddies. It’s near where we used to live so we often went there but it’s a bit further away now so we don’t often go. I’ve suggested to OH that we might use our voucher towards lunch there soon.

We spent £10 each on our tickets for the event and £10 on raffle tickets. For £30 we’ve had a fun afternoon with plenty of food and entertainment and good company. And we got our raffle ticket money back in the form of a voucher. Can’t be bad.

On that note I’d better end as this post is getting very long. Sleep well tonight everyone.

Well it keeps coming over very black but so far not a spot of rain. I changed my bed did a white wash including the bedding. Watered both gardens then later on dead headed round the garden. Just spent half an hour cutting down long branches of one of my jasmines. It is a pretty white scented flower but it is a real thug. I thought Jake had killed it in March or whenever he last came but no such luck I also managed to get to some long branches of the ramblingbrise and cut them down. Bin is quarter full now. If it is not too hot tomorrow might manage a bit more, it has stayed around 22 today. Just looking at next week still no rain to speak of an 28 a couple of days.

Went outside and saw a shadow of a butterfly on the roof over the patio. Found it stuck in a spiders web but it was'nt a butterfly it was a lovely blue damsel fly. Fetched the camera and took a pic and then rescued it but had to get more web off its legs and as it was on my hand I took more pics then got the rest of the web off it and it flew away.

Morning girls,

It was quite a chilly wind here last night and I felt a bit cold for the first time in ages.

Pc is telling me its high pollen today and I have been sneezing and have runny eyes today too. 19 degrees here and pc says mostly sunny. The sky is grey white and blue here.

Nothing planned for today but must go and get my scripts from the shop and I'm at Stu's for dinner.

I do hope you get on better with this lower dose of tablets Mandy and its good you had a better nights sleep it makes all the difference.

Morning all,

Nice sunny morning and it's 13 degrees ,the wind was really blowing last night as we went to bed I could see the trees really swaying .
Had a better night got up about twelve thirty for the loo then nodded off until about six ,hopefully the tablets are beginning to kick in I can have three today .

There's lots of dead heading that needs doing so I want to see if I can do a little then sit a little today ,hairdresser comes tomorrow morning.

Good morning all only 13 here, very sunny, still no rain and no wind.
Slept quite well. It was not so hot last night but I still slept with only a sheet over me.

It remains to be seen whether the new group works out. It always takes time for these things to settle. It is different to when a group forms with a definite purpose (photography) then we know everyone is on the same 'page'.

Yes it was annoying that the speech was not clear. Really don't know if it is their equipment but daughter says it was clear when they saw it at a 'proper' cinema. Granted 3 or 4 of us have hearing problems normally but not to that extent and two of us have good hearing.

Nothing planned for today, bedding is already in the wash but otherwise, if it stays cool, I may get a bit done in the garden. I think the trouble is, with it being so hot and everything a struggle I have lost heart out there a bit.

When I did the big pond filter the other day I noticed the swallow was on the nest again and did the filter and she did'nt move. When I went in today she was'nt on the nest so out came the mirror with a long handle and |I put it up over the nest and I now have another 5 eggs in it so hopfully another nice brood. Fingers crossed she raises this lot.

Annx Report 2 Jul 2025 19:45

Evening All,

Well it really cooled down overnight here. We actually felt like going out so went down the road to costa for a coffee and egg cob deal and then round the corner to M&S for OH to get another pair of shorts PJs. They are in T shirt material, navy shorts with a striped T shirt, so he could wear them round the house instead as they don't look like PJs. He was lucky as they were the last pair in his size.

Then he had a 20 minute appointment with a nurse, but he would only deal with one problem. When OH got outside he checked the time and he'd been less than ten minutes and it wasn't even time for his appointment yet either! He could only assume the receptionist had booked for one problem, but usually that is a ten minute appointment. What is going on that the mostly older people who need to visit the doctor more often are being made to make more than one visit. It means taking up parking more often, more expense in travel and difficulty for some.

I had to smile at the 'hat' incident Vera. It's another similarity to OH who does the same! Once he left his hat at another office before he retired and they sent it to him in the office mail and it arrived flattened! He's left his hat in restaurants before too. I did grumble at him when he went out and hung up a hardly worn navy gabardine mac on some pegs where he went. When he went to put it on to go home, someone had taken his mac and left their old tatty navy mac in it's place!! It's good your OH is sorted with his ears and eyes now so no more trips for that. Yes you could be getting a ride on your granddaughter's lovely horse! :-) I wanted a pony from before school age when I went on one of those metal bike seats with mum to a house where she worked and they had a black Shetland pony. Also I would ride my 3 wheeler bike to a tiny shop in the next road in the village where we lived then next to the Cannock Chase. There was a retired Shire carthorse in a paddock on the way and I used to pull big handfuls of grass to give him that he couldn't reach over the gate. I was a bit scared and in awe of his size.

The new group idea sounds promising AnnG. I hope it succeeds. That was good your neighbour fixed the security light for you. My wall pots on the front have the same problem needing new screws and rawl plugs. It sounds like the film was enjoyable, but a shame the sound wasn't good. It's the same with some tv programmes too and some people, including presenters don't speak clearly or gabble. It can't all be my ears and hearing as others sound really clear.

Mel your goldfish sound frisky with the warm weather. It's good you didn't lose Spotty, but a shame they got tangled. It's a good job you managed to free them.

I sorted my car insurance today and was pleased in the end to renew with my existing provider as it was £100 less than last year with them, so a good saving. They had sent me an email reminder as I never auto renew, but our post is so infrequent these days, I still hadn't had the renewal quote.

Sorry you had another painful night Mandy and that the jumping was bad too. I hope the lower dose meds will help. I know how long the nights are when you have pain and that jumping must just add to it. I hope you have a better night tonight as you must be so tired.

11 of you was a good turn out and I hope it all works out for your ladies group.

Iv'e cut some sticky out branches off the box hedge just outside where the bird feeder is and pulled a little more ivy off the back wall. Fed the fish and finished the bed so now I am going in the shower.

I'm thrilled to bits I hav't lost Spotty and keep grinning to myself. Silly I know but I do love my fish as most of them were bred in my pond.

I think I am getting sausage and mash at Stu's tomorrow, well thats what he mentioned last week but it remains to be seen.

It is 22 degrees here but feels like more. Luckily it was cool in the cinema as there are no windows of course and no strong air con. The actual fil was very good, acting great and scenery lovely but we all (6 of us) found the speech was muzzy, loud enogh but not clear so it was a good job we all knew the story.
I didn't know but apparently Moth died fairly recently.
Lunch in M&S was not spectacular, I had a breakfast ciabatta with cheddar cheese omelette and chilly jam. It was a bit tasteless and dry so won't have that again.

While in town I spotted an emerald green cardigan (M&S) that I liked and I did need a green cardigan so bought that and a strappy pyjama top.

The meeting went well Vera 11 of us there and we are meeting again next month, we are still sort of feeling our way as to what we need from meetings but I think it will work out OK.

Thats great that oh has clear ears and eyes now Vera and good he just remembered his hat at the last moment.

Iv'e pottered in the garden today done some watrering and filled soak trays. pulled a bit more ivy off the back wall and stipped the bed and not put the bottom sheet back on yet and I have to fight with the quilt cover. I also did a wsh and Ithink thats dry on the line now. Been to neighbours next door but one and he gave me a lot of Yellow Rattle seeds. He's put the lily I gave him in his pond and the water mint.

Not going to Stu's tonight its going to be tomorrow night now as I rang him to see so I had time to get a dinner out of the freezer, mac cheese.

One bit of very good news though I still have Spotty Muldoon and it was one that was mostly white on top and a couple of spot underneath which I thought was a plain white one and I still have the other white one so I am so very pleased it was'nt Spotty.

SuffolkVera Report 2 Jul 2025 16:48

Good afternoon everyone

I hope you are all having a good day. It was still very hot overnight but the temperature dropped very early morning and the rain started so it was a lot more comfortable. It was constant drizzle all morning but the sun has just come out now and it feels very hot and muggy again. I can’t make head nor tail or the various weather apps as they differ so much. The one on the computer says it is 17 degrees and feels like 17, on my iPad it is 20 degrees and feels like 16 and on my phone it says 21 degrees and feels like 25. There’s a bit of a difference between feeling like 16 degrees and feeling like 25!

Aah, I’ve just had a lightbulb moment. Both the iPad and the PC are giving me the forecast for the town which, as I’ve said before, is only a mile and a half away but the phone gives me the forecast for this specific little area and we do seem to be in a little micro climate of our own here. I wonder why I’ve never thought of that before now. I must be very dozy.

Enjoy the film AnnG and let us know what you think of it. Our tiny local theatre sometimes screens films so I’ll be going to see it if they put it on. It’s good that your neighbour was able to fix the camera back for you. How did your meeting about setting up a ladies only group go? Will you go ahead with the idea? I know what you mean about not fancying a big, hot meal in the weather we’ve been having and, left to myself, I would probably have had something like egg on toast last night. OH isn’t a bit fussy and eats whatever I put in front of him but he does like his meat and veg and I had a lot of veg in the fridge to get eaten up before it went over. Tonight is similar. It will be meat pie with veg though I won’t do pots as I struggle with pastry and pots in one meal.

Talking of dinners, I hope Stu cooks something nice for you tonight Mel. It’s always good when someone else does the cooking.

I was getting a bus into town this morning but it was raining and our buses are notoriously unreliable so OH offered to drive me in. He dropped me near the hairdressers, drove back home and an hour later drove back to town to go for his ear appointment. In the meantime I had my hair done and did some errands before meeting up with OH at Specsavers. He remembered his hat just as he was going out of the door so had to dash back in again and get it. That’s him finished now – eyes and ears are all functioning as they should.

Gosh, it’s getting very hot again. I think I am going to have to move from here. I’m at the computer in the study and tucked up under the eaves. The sun is pouring through the window and I am beginning to feel a bit nauseous so I’m off to a cooler room.

Morning girls,

It looks like another warm one here this morning and its 16 degrees at the moment and pc says mostly sunny. It was much cooler yesterday but I still did'nt do much.

I am at Stu's tonight unless I hear otherwise during the day.

That was good of your neighbour to come and put your camera back on the wall Anng. Saved you calling Jake's dad and having to pay.

Mandy I do hope the doc can sort something out for you with your legs and knees. Its so horrid being in pain at night even worse than during the day. Lets hoe the new tabs will work once they are in your system and the lower dose will suit you better.

No rain overnight but it is raining now a nice steady rain so no watering tonight only the greenhouse .

Vera she's a lovely horse and I like her name ,I don't blame you giving the meeting a miss nothing worse than having to chat when you have a bad head.
Hope OH doesn't forget his hat today :-D

Didn't have a good night lots of pain in my knees again the jumping was awful last night and it's still doing it this morning so I'm sitting here with the ice pack on my knee to see if I can reduce any swelling that's causing the pain .

Good morning all 14 degrees now, it did cool down a bit in the night so I got enough sleep in several bit. No rain that I can see over night although it is very overcast. Makes it difficult to know what to wear going into town to see the film The Salt Path.

Vera she is a beautiful horse I hope your geanddaughter has many hours od fun with her.
You did seem to get a lot done yesterday despite the hear but probably a good idea to not go to the meeting.

Goodness a full hot meal. I have found I just don't fancy a big meal in this heat I actually ended up having eggs on toast yesterday followed by an ice cream. I did have a hot meal on sunday with the chicken leg and cauli and broccoli but no potatoes. then Monday as I had cooked two chicken legs, I had the second one cold.

Ann I hope the surgery escalating the appointment gets somewhere for your OH.

too hot and tired to answer all the posts tonight. However I will tell you that my friend over the road about 73 and a Beavers leader and a very busy ladt, when she got in from her voluntary work at the cats' rescue centre, she came over and re-mounted the camera up on the wall over the door. (I held the step ladder. She is not a slim person but was up the ladder balancing while she screwed in new rawl plugs and screws and fixed it. Just as well she is handy as there don't seem to be many handy men in this road now. I am pretty sure that Jake's Dad could have fixed it but not sure they would have time this time of year for such a small job. I also know daughter could have fixed it if she was here.
