How do I find out what he was deported for? He was sent to Tasmania in 1803.

If he were transported in 1803 he must have been one of the earliest to go to Tasmania. Where did you get the details from as it usually gives a date/place of conviction on the transportation details.

Hi, yes transported, (sorry), from UK on a ship called Calcutta which I think left Portsmouth in Apr 1803

Hi, got details from a Tasmanian site whilst playing around on the net yesterday but do not know how accurate they are. I believe he went out on the Calcutta which left Portsmouth in Apr 1803 for Port Phillip but was then moved to Tasmania. I know he died in Sorrell in 1833.

From the National Archives

Consult the transportation registers in HO 11 (1787 - 1871). These are not listed by the convict's name but by ship and date of departure, so you will need to have some information to narrow your search. These will tell you where and when your convict was tried, and may lead you to records of the trial.

they were incredibly detailed, giving a full description of him and his time in Tasmania.They ran to several closely written pages. They were sent by airmail. It didn't cost that much. The only problem I had was in paying for them as it would have cost a fortune to get a check in dollars. They accept payment by card, but you have to send your card details, by post. I didn't want to do that in case they went astray, so I emailed them and they gave me a phone number. I called and paid over the phone.The phone call was very cheap and it was worth the hassle.

From the page I have given the link to, it looks like you might be able to get some of the info on line
