I have been advised to search for Phillimore's parish records etc, and "simply" put in the parish or district etc. For the life of me, I just can't seem to find anything. I have tried looking on Archive.org, but it keeps coming up no result.
Can someone please instruct this Phillimore illiterate on where and how I can find these records?

Thankyou for that. I have asked for help on different names and branches of the family, but one person it seems we are all at at dead end on is the one I am looking for.

I have already posted about him, and have found an abundance of distant relatives, all who stop at the same person. He is recorded on Ancestry, all with no more information that I already have.
I wanted to search other people in a few different places, using name variations such as Fisk, Fisch, Fiske etc. Also I was hoping to look at not only Great Hallingbury, but all of Essex, and into Hertfordshire.
I found a Rev. John Fish in Little Hallingbury, but no extra data regarding his family. I also found a Cornelius Fish from Great Hallingbury, and even had his will transcribed in the hope a family connection could be made.
There is nothing more on Ancestry to find, and through LDS I have made contact with a file owner that has shared their information with me. There is nothing more to find there also. There is nothing at all in the parish records on pilot search, the only thing I did find was the original marriage entry.
I was sent a link a while back of a Phillimore transcript of an Essex parish record, and found a number of Fish names in it. But I didn't save the link, and have no idea how to go looking again. It was through Archives.org, and I was told to just type in Phillimore Essex..but it shows nothing. Apparantly there are books on there that are free to view.
I just tried going through the site again, and was able to bring up a heap, but when I went in only USA material.

The IGI information was via a descendant who had done over 30 years research, and has verified the information I had gathered, but could add no more regarding John.
As for primary documents...well, I live in Australia, and John lived over 340 years ago.
If I can find out how to get back to, and search for the Phillimore records, as I viewed before, then I can do my own little search, working on assumptions and educated guesses. My hope is to find Fish names in the same location at the similar time, and try to connect them. Also to work on the neighbouring areas and parishes, and name variations.

There are many private family websites that have him listed, but never any further back. I have scoured through quite a few of them, including the Australian and USA connections.
If he was an inlaw, or sub branch of the tree, I would probably not worry so much, but he is my direct 8x maternal great grandfather, so an important line. And even more so, an interesting line with what I have found so far in the family.

Given the time frame I would suggest that you may need to look beyond parish registers and delve into parish, and other, records.

How much info you can gain online will probably depend on what has been transcribed...Google, Genuki and the search of archive holdings through the NA website being starting points :-)

I have just scanned through the original images of the parish records 1655-1662 for baptisms in Great Hallingbury, which incorporates Little Hallingbury with no sign of a John Fish being baptised. I also searched the same for Great Dunmow, where he was married to Ellen Bowtell...no results either.
How rare would it be that a child was not baptised?
Because his actual birthdate is not 100% positive, I would logically have to start searching nearby parishes outward.
Could someone please help me with the names of close parishes. I am also presuming I will have to search Hertfordshire also (which I understand is a neighbouring county), as some of his family members come from that area.

So far, have viewed the wonderful records at SEAX, and no sign of John being baptised from 1655-1662 at Great and Little Hallingbury, Thorley and Great Dunmow.
Bishop's Stortford next on the list...if i can find the records.

Good thoughts SGirl..and I have been searching what records I can find starting in the 1640's.
I have just looked through the Halstead records...again nothing.
However.............I did find his wife's baptism entry, not where everyone has listed her at, (Great Hallingbury), but at Thaxted. This of course got my hopes up, but alas, no John Fish.
I found not only her baptism, but also it clearly states born and baptised on the same day, with her parents names.
The Essex SEAX records are fantastic and I would highly recommend anyone with a spare few days to look through the parish records - some amazing entries with references to women buried as virgins, and the child baptised who was the son of a black who was owned by the landowner!
A request please. I am struggling to find parish records for Bishops Stortford. I keep getting redirected to either the Hert. website, which is not very user friendly, or to the Essex site which does not have the records listed in their very user friendly parish list.
If anyone knows where I can sift through the original images, it would be greatly appreciated.

The last few days I have sighted the original entries for Ellen Bowtell's birth and baptism, her parent's marriage, her marriage to John Fish, their son John and his children's baptisms. Ellen and John's burials, and thankfully the registrar wrote John sen and Jun while the 2 were alive..that made it easier. Still no sign of John snr's baptism.
Quite possible he came from a different parish, as I found that Ellen was baptised in Thaxted, married in Great Dunmow, and buried at Much (Great) Hallingbury. No mention in the registry of which parish she came from, so must think likewise for John.
