I was watching “You do you think you are? USA” on TV last night and Susan Sarandon was trying to trace her Italian ancestors. She went onto a website and typed her ancestors surname in to find what area of Italy they possible could came from and it came up they originated from the area of Tuscany. Does anyone know what this site is called as I would like to know where my Germany ancestors possible originate from?

I've tried that but the Germany surname I am looking for is "Fix" so of course you get a lot websites come up with the word "fix" in it. Many thanks away for the suggestion.

Thanks Chris - just had a quick look at Cyndi's List for Germany and it looks quite promising. Even if I don’t find what I am looking for it should be helpful.

World Profiler is an excellent site, but unfortunately it won't tell you where a name came from. It will, however, tell you where the names can be found now.

My own surname is extremely rare and can only be found in Germany, Poland, the UK and the USA. There are only nine of us in the UK, down from ten last weekend when my niece got married. The USA also has only a single family.

My father was born in Poland but we believe his ancestors might possibly have been German. (The boundaries kept changing) His parents both spoke German as their first language.

So far we have not been able to find any more info. I have had limited email contact with families in both Germany and Poland but all seem reluctant to discuss their ancestry. It seem as though it is something they would rather forget.

Thanks Andysmum, by using publicprofiler I was able to verify that one of the names in my tree is Spanish.

Now I just have to find out when how and why they came to England!

Hi everyone, I would just like to thank everyone for their comments and feedback. Still trying to find where in Germany the Fix's come from but I have found some useful information on the way too from some of the websites you have all suggested. Many thanks again - much appreciated.
