I'm wondering about this family in Bootle in 1911:

Might say step mother because Doris was using a different name? and we don't know what documentation she had if she had been fostered by Malenbergs?

For assisted passage to be given I would guess that she had not been to Canada previously and was in UK until that outward journey??

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 21 Aug 2017 10:27

Maybe "step" on Doris's travel record is the immigration clerk's mistake or confusion, because of Mr Edwards being her step-father?

Rachel had an older brother Luke (see 1891 census on page 1) - is Elizabeth Rachel's niece?

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 21 Aug 2017 07:51

The Elizabeth Edwards at the same address as Rachel on the 1939 is transcribed as:

50 Marsh Lane , Bootle C.B., Lancashire, England
Elizabeth Edwards 11 Oct 1906 Female House Wife Unpaid Married

EDIT: According to a tree on Ancestry- this Elizabeth was married to Rachel's son, Arthur Thomas Edwards:

Marriages Sep 1929
Edwards Arthur T Plunkett W.Derby 8b 1320
Plunkett Elizabeth Edwards W.Derby 8b 1320

Rambling

Rambling Report 20 Aug 2017 23:48

There are 4 closed records above Rachel's name on the 1939, visible above that is an Elizabeth Edwards at the same address, but the age is unfortunately obscured by the black redaction line.

Do you know when Rachel died?

Rambling

Rambling Report 20 Aug 2017 23:16

Doris went on assisted passage, as a domestic

"British Immigration

Generally speaking, British immigration may be divided into two classes, viz.-(I) Those who receive assisted passage, and (2) Those who pay their own fare.

The Assisted Passage Agreement of December 28, 1929, was effective during the calendar year 1930 and applicable to the following classes of migrants: (a) Selected families proceeding under an approved Land Settlement Scheme; (b) Selected families for farm placement; (c) House-workers, and (d) Juveniles."

Rambling
