Trying to find out why our grandmother had the name 'Hawkins' included in her given names. The rumour was that one of our ancestors married beneath herself and was disinherited by the descendants of Sir John Hawkins. We are trying to see if the story is true. My grandmother was a Heays. Her given names were Grace Eliza Hawkins. She married Andrew McGill in New Zealand.

Our grandmother Grace Eliza Hawkins Heays (b) Hobart, 14/11/1881 child of William Henry Heays (Capt) (b) 18/10/1853 Hobart, son of Robert J Hayes (Capt) (b)Suttonwash, Lincolnshire 24/11/1808. Robert married Eliza Williams 24/10/1848. William Williams is a name that is connected somehow.
It would be nice if you could unravel some of the mystery.

There are 3 or 4 family trees on ancestry that seem to have full details of the Tibballs family, and quite a lot on the West.

I haven't so far seen a Hawkins.


BUT do remember that parents sometimes gave the child a name belonging to someone they admired or a godparent.

I so appreciate all the research you have done. I have looked at the Tibbbals and West lot. As you say there is an extensive research done. they were a family that were one of the families assisted out to Tasmania (Antipodes) from Bedworth by Nona Bellairs, a very helpful single lady and daughter of reverend Bellaires. Our family have carried the 'Nona' name in her honour ever since. :-)

I can't find the parents of Robert John Hayes. Nor can I find anything further on ELIZA WILLIAMS ancestors. Can you help me here please.
