Only trying to tidy up loose ends of mother-in-laws siblings but I'm going to get a copy of marriage certificate for first marriage, as that will give quite a lot of information.

You are all so good, many thanks.

She called herself Pearce on one of her marriages - who did she name as her father?

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 19 Apr 2021 16:54

Re opening her closed 1939 record, as mentioned by ErikaH -

info here;
https://tinyurl.com/22ys2rnu

including -
"If you have proof of death but cannot identify a specific record [in 1939 ], you can request a search of the 1939 Register for a fee using The National Archives Freedom of Information (FOI) request form."

The fee is £24.35 - non-refundable.

In the "additional information" box on the application form, you would have to explain about her various surnames, especially the Pearce connection.

ArgyllGran Report 19 Apr 2021 16:49

Yes, I know - I had hoped it might be possible to find the Pearces in 1939 - but no.

Maralyn

Maralyn Report 19 Apr 2021 16:43

The info mentioned by ErikaH is our Eunice - born 1928 and died 2008. Parents Bertie Smith and Gertrude Muncey. Unfortunately, mother-in-law never mentioned any Pearce family names and she would have only been a baby/young child herself when Eunice left and possibly before Myrtle was then born in 1929.

The marriage of Gertrude Margaret (mother-in-law) above to Benjamin Whamond (father-in-law) in 1946 is correct. Marriage certificates states spinster and batchelor.

Many thanks all of you.

Do you know the Pearces' first names?

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 19 Apr 2021 14:22

If you want to find her in 1939, you’ll need to provide evidence of her death to the people who publish it. That would entail buying her death cert, and (I think) paying a fee

Gertrude SMITH b.1903, she married Herbert Muncey in 1920 and had 2 children. She left the family home to live with Bertie Smith and had more 4 children:
Bertie Cyril b.1925; Gertrude Margaret b.1927 (my mother in law); Eunice Viviene Rosina b.1928 and Myrtle Lilian May b.1929. She never married Bertie Smith.
She again left the family home to live with Albert Settler and had 3 more children and eventually married Albert.

So Eunice was born a Smith but due to circumstances was 'unofficially adopted' and brought up by the Pearce family. She married as a Pearce to Robert Weatherstone and later to Ronald Knight. Her biological parents were: Bertie Smith and Gertrude Muncey (mmn Smith). Perhaps she was raised out of Medway (Chatham/Gillingham/Rochester), although we know she lived not far from her sisters in Gillingham in the 1950s.

Very interesting reading indeed.

Eunice (only registered as Smith on GRO, although both Smith and Muncey on FreeBMD) seems to have had a lot of siblings and half siblings.

Herbert and Gertrude appear to have separated between 1922 and 1925.
Gertrude was with Albert Setter at least from 1931.

The first two children are registered as Muncey on GRO.

The youngest in Tonbridge is only registered as Muncey, with mmn Smith, on FreeBMD. 1945 births aren't on the GRO website.

The next three youngest (1932-40) are registered as Setter on GRO, and as both Setter and Muncey (but not Smith) on FreeBMD

The rest are registered only as Smith on GRO, although as both Muncey and Smith on FreeBMD.

1921 - Iris Minnie Gertrude - married william Reynolds in 1944, died in Hythe in 2017
1922 - Eric George - died 1991 in Preston RD, having married in 1945 in Preston.
1925 - Bertie Cyril . He was in the Royal Marines (as Smith) and died 1945.
1927 - a female . Several possible marriages in Kent - one to someone of the same surname as Maralyn's husband, but maybe that's a coincidence.
1929 - a female who may still be alive.
1932 - a male, registered as Setter. Was still living in 2018.
1935 - Sheila Evelyn Setter. Married in 1954 in Chatham, and died 1997 Chatham.
1940 - a male, still living, on 2020 ER.

A tree on Ancestry suggests that Eunice's father Herbert had a relationship (can't see a marriage) with an Isabel Lawson in Durham, and had several children with her. - so more half siblings for Eunice.

There are seven Muncey/Lawson births in Durham 1927 -46.

Her birth was registered under both Smith and Muncey, with mmn Smith, but I'm not seeing her in 1939 under either name.

Perhaps she's a closed record..

Are these her parents?
