William G. died in 1912, regd. Guildford. He is buried in unconsecrated ground. Does anyone know why this is his burial place? His parents are buried in consecrated ground in Brookwood.

Perhaps at his own request, if he had no religious belief??

Are you sure he was buried? Maybe he was cremated and his ashes scattered somewhere.

If he was definitely buried in a cemetery, maybe they have records which would explain the reason.


Some Google search results say that local authority cemeteries are not consecrated, though others confusingly say they are.
A particular plot can be consecrated if wished.

Any subsequent burial will certainly be in a local authority cemetery, which will not be consecrated. Only churchyards are consecrated and even then many extensions to churchyards are unconsecrated (mainly because of legal complications)"

How do you know it’s unconsecrated grounds ?

If I remember properly I think they always had their own stand at the West Surrey FH events, so I assume a lot of research has been done on the graves.

I have one lot of ancestors who were Welsh Baptists and all are buried in unconsecrated ground. (The cemetery is huge and all is consecrated apart from one small section, which made it much easier to search for people!!)

My Mum had a baby in early 1940s who died after a few days and because she wasn't baptised she was buried in unconsecrated ground in the church yard. My Mum never forgot this and blamed herself I think. JAD

I don't know if that would have any bearing on where he was buried - but maybe people were glad he'd gone.
