Trying to help my cousin find his father Gordon Hillary.. Gordon was from Gateshead and had a sister Ruth. He was born around 1927 , was in the Air Force , had red wavy hair and married Morag Dingwall about 1948 in Liverpool. Their son Gordon was born in June 1949, unfortunately the father Gordon had died from pneumonia before the baby son was born. Any help would be very much appreciated says Sandra / Germany

I can't give the sort of detail in the above posts, but you may be interested to learn that Luke Hillary changed his name to Henry Thompson and knocked years off his age, the correct information only coming to light in a correction added to his 1922 death certficate in 1923 following a statutory declaration by Edward Hillary. He marrried my great aunt twice (!), in 1898 and 1914, both times claiming to be a widower, although it seems very unlikrly hat he was actually married to his first "wife", Isabella Robson.

In the 1871 Census Christopher Hillary (18), Mark Hillary (16), Mathew Hillary (8) and Henry D Hillary (3) were with their mother, Hannah Hillary (37). However James, John and Edward were in the Gateshead Industrial School, and had had their ages reduced to 12, 10 and 8 respectively, presumably so James would qualify to be there (committed there under the Industrial School Act 1866).

I have more information if it would be useful.
