On old style census forms you can see from the enumerators notes that a property is vacant etc. On the later ones where there is a form per household how can you find what has happened to the missing address?

FMP or Ancestry may be able to supply the answer - try asking them…………although logically, if forms were not collected due to the addresses being unoccupied, there is simply no record.

I see you have added to your post.
It is odd that the same address is missing on the 1911 & 1921 but is there on the 1901 & 1939 register.

Do you mean that the address is marked as unoccupied in 1901 and 1939, but not listed at all in 1911 and 1921?

In 1901 the details were entered by the enumerator, and in 1939 they would have to make sure everyone was included, so would go to every address.

In 1921 and 1911 the forms were completed by the householder.

If there was nobody living there in 1921 and 1911, no form would be returned.

(Just guessing!)

No - I'm partly wrong about 1911.

Apparently in 1911 every address was listed in the enumerators' summary books., including vacant properties.
But of course no household form would be completed if nobody lived there.
Have you looked at the summary books as well as the individual households' forms?

". . . . These summary books are the only place you will find a description of each building such as ‘House and shop’, ‘Hotel’, ‘Private house’. Unoccupied houses and non-residential properties such as churches and factories are also listed."

But I seem to be right about 1921:

Thanks AG, That’s great, I’d forgotten about the summary books.

The house was occupied in 1901 and 1939 but there is no sheet for the middle two. Of course they are the ones I want.

I’ll have another go later.

Added. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. The house is not listed in the Enumerators book, unfortunatley I can't marry up the unoccupied houses to exact addresses. I made a mistake , it is on the 1921 but I can't acces it but I probably don't need it as I found someone I needed up the road. It only solves one minnor part of the conundrum which I don't believe will ever get solved.
