If you didn't have to register births did this mean you didnt have to register deaths and marriages? Thanks Jennie |

Just to answer re marriages and deaths. It is highly unlikely that a marriage will be missing from the index, because the event was conducted by another party,(under the direction of a registrar). A birth and death registration only occurs when an informant attends the registrars office and registers the event, you can't register a marriage in the same way,the registration is part of the marriage ceremony itself,(and it is also witnessed) Glen |

Glen - just a teensy weensy correction there, hope you dont mind. What you say is quite correct - a marriage cannot be missed off the local Registrar's records. (Well, um, unless the Vicar forgets to send his list to the local RO....) But in my experience I have found quite a few marriages which never got from the local RO to the GRO - Manchester was particularly naughty about this between 1850 and 1860 ish. Olde Crone |
