Can anyone find george and or Caroline on the 1871? Please. May be Westminster area, or Bethnel Green, or perhaps somewhere in Warwicksire. There is the death of a caroline SHERIFF in Foleshill in 1871 who is within a year or two of the expected age. George Sr had at least three brothers, Richard H, Frederick, and William. All were Hawkers at some time. Richard and William were living together on the 1881 and did not seem to marry. William had a wife 20 years younger than himself who also was a hawker. Father was Richard, a musician. But where is Caroline Mary Heasley. I cannot find her anywhere else but on George Jr's birth Cert. Did she exist? David |

I think some of mine were found under gooseberry bushes, judging from the success I have (not) had in tracing their parents. |

Helen Yes that seems about right. I have not found a Caroline that I can really identify as her. I think the children lost 10 years due to enumerators ticks. Jan 1874 Married Mary Ann Elliott Nov 1874 George born Mother Carlone Mary Sherriff, formerley Heasley 1881 Wife Mary and one son is James E Sheriff, b abt 1871. This is, I believe a son of Mary Ann and is Actually son of Mary Ann, John J Elliott, who appears on the 1871 with his mother and father, John J also. On the 1891 He is John Sheriff, stepson. Name ii spelt with 1 or 2 Rs. David |

Davo Let me try to get this straight - 1861 census wife is Caroline. 29, Dressmaker, b Leamington Warwicks. Place Liberty of the Rolls. June 1861 he married Caroline Watts, Liberty of the Rolls (the same person, who was living with him in the census??) Can’t find on 1871 Jan 1874, as a widower he married Mary Ann Elliott, widow, formerly Edgeley at Bethnal Green. - have you looked for a death for Caroline before this date? Nov 11 1874, my GF’s birth cert gives mother as Caroline Mary Sherriff, formerly Heasley. Birth registered by father.(what happened to Mary Ann - or is she Caroline Mary?) Three later children have Mary Ann as mother. In 1881 and 1891 George’s wife is Mary, but some of the children have lost 10 years between 1881 and 1891. nell |

My ggf was living alone on the 1851 census (Geo Sherriff or Sheriff, Hawker, b St Clement Danes abt 1819-1822) On the 1861 he had a wife Caroline. 29, Dressmaker, b Leamington Warwicks. Place Liberty of the Rolls. June 1861 he married Caroline Watts, Liberty of the Rolls. Can’t find on 1871. Jan 1874, as a widower he married Mary Ann Elliott, widow, formerly Edgeley at Bethnal Green. Nov 11 1874, my GF’s birth cert gives mother as Caroline Mary Sherriff, formerly Heasley. Birth registered by father. Three later children have Mary Ann as mother. In 1881 and 1891 George’s wife is Mary, but some of the children have lost 10 years between 1881 and 1891. I have not managed to find any other trace of Caroline Mary Heasley. Questions. Did Caroline Mary actually exist? Was first wife Caroline still alive and George was not a widower but a bigamist? George could have been 55 (ages on census’ vary with birth dates of 1819 to 1824, both marr certs of full age, death in 1899 as 78) Was he so pleased at having a first child at that age that he got drunk and couldn’t remember which wife was the mother? Any other suggestions? David |
