Try his regimental museum; you may not be lucky but I found stuff on my ancestor who left the army in 1896 Best of luck

The WW1 records will have the parish he said he was born in, the year of birth, how many years, months (and sometimes days old he was) and sometimes the actual date. If his record survives it will have next of kin and address. The one I found had details of the marriage, date and place, and the childrens date and place of birth.

They say that the local ROs can be (but aren't always) very flexibly helpful. Might be worth ringing to ask about the checking factors? Christine

Well you can always ask for the fathers name to be checked before they send it - then if its wrong itll only cost you £4.

Hi Heather He was born in 1894 and on the Y.BMD there is a Malcolm Orr born in that year. I know who his father should be so I guess if a copy of the birth cert isn't in with his war records I'll just have to buy the Yorkshire Malcolm and see if it's him! Was hoping I could have this solved in one swoop! (I think he was born on Yorkshire and will have a few stern words to say to the relatives who've had me looking for him in Ireland for the last 6 months!!) K

Sadly Kimberly not a lot of WW1 records have survived. And his birth certificate is not likely to be on there anyway. You know his date of birth - is it on the medals card? If you know that, you could at least discount the Hull one by checking the bmd?

Hi Gill I'm planning a trip to Kew but I wondered what I might find in his file. Also what info do I need to find the right file? I'm really looking forward to going to the NA... planning it to coincide with tomorrows football final so I don't have to watch it! K

Kimberley, you will have to go to Kew i think or pay someone to look for you, they will not be online. Gill

Hi I already have the medal card for my G.G.Grandfather who served in WW1. If I go to the National Archives what can I expect to find in his war records? In particular will a copy of his birth certificate be in there? There is a family disagreement at the moment as to whether he was born in County Mayo, Ireland or Hull, East Yorkshire! Kimberley :o)
