I think been thinking of investing in this book as I have heard it is an invaluable source of info, but what is it exactly?!! Is it just an Index of parishes within a given county, or does it actually contain parish registers. No site that the book is being sold actually explains what is is, any help gratefully received. a confused fuzzy x

This book contains pre 1832 parish boundary maps, 1834 county maps and details of how to locate both original records and copies of them. The coverage of the IGI is also given. A great resource for all those looking for locations of old parishes and where the records are located.

Yes sylvia, it is expensive, that is why I wanted to know if it was worth buying, I am still thinking about it. I was hoping it contained some transcribed parish records and then it would be invaluable!! Someone said they had some Middlesex marriage records which had come from Phillimores and I wondered if it were this book, but obviously not! fuzzy x

Have you tried checking your surrounding council libraries - they may have a copy you can either borrow or use on site.

Hi Fuzzy, Hope this description helps (specifically about Norfolk). 'Phillimore's Marriage Registers' is a series of books published in the late 19th and early 20th centuries by Phillimore and Co. The books are usually only found in libraries, but recently some of them have been scanned and are available on CDROM - this includes all of the Norfolk volumes. They exist for about 30 counties and there are 12 volumes for Norfolk, covering 127 parishes, which is about 17% of the total. The dates for each parish depend on the surviving registers, and there may be gaps. The volumes contain transcriptions of marriage registers for several parishes, with each entry being in a standard form, for example (using fictitious people): John Smith & Mary Mason ... 19 Aug 1703 As with any transcription, it is advisable to check the original parish register, where there may also be additional information. There is an index to Phillimore's Marriage Registers, but it is not a surname index. Instead it shows in which volumes a parish appears. This covers all the counties for which volumes were published, not only Norfolk. Bryant Rosier, M. E. (compiler) Index to Parishes in Phillimore's Marriages. Archive CD Books - Parish (Marriage) Registers Phillimore's parish registers (marriages) has been published by Archive CD Books in conjunction with the Society of Genealogists. Each county available is covered within one CD and these are fully searchable. Please read the description for each county to find which parishes are included (on website). Carol
