Hi Linda, checked email at home before I came out to work. Images have come through ok now. Thank you so much for that. I am now going to contact the Galen Historical Society to see if they can tell me anything. Apparently there was a big glass factory in mid 19th century. Maybe Fred went over for that reason. Hope they might be able to help me with Fred and Mil marriage and also Mary's birth. Most of my ancestors lived pretty humdrum lives (bit like me lol) but these Fosters may be the first I have found who may add a bit of interest to my tree. Was going to PM you but changed my mind, Thought I would thank you publicly! ttfn Rose (going boss eyed already from reading message boards and it's only 9.45 - must do some work!!) |

Hi Perranmaid, sorry for the delay in replying. have been looking at that site I found and also about the Erie canal. Anywho, Mary's dad was Frederick Henry Foster bc 1830 Newton, Notts. He was a plumber and glazier. Mum was Millicent Morris bc 1822 Barrowby. Would be great if you could find them on the 1850 US census as I can't find either of them on the 1851. thanks Rose - waits with eager anticipation :-D |

Hi Sam, where would I be able to see USA census? I think that question is academic though, as she (Mary Ann Singleton Foster) was born in USA 1854 and next siblings (twins) were born 1856 in Colsterworth and I expect US censuses are same as ours or Canada, ie in the10s or 11s? Her actual place of birth differs from census to census (so what’s new?). 1861 states North America United States 1871 states similar 1881 states N America. Clyde. Wayne County N York State 1891 states North America town of Garton (surname now Kelly) 1901 states North America (British Subject) and someone else has (helpfully??) written along side it ‘Canada’ Woah! Just been for a mooch round Google (again!) and have found that the village of Clyde is in the town of GALEN in Wayne county, so on the 1891 the L in Galen has been crossed to make it look like a T. I have googled this so many times; don’t know why I haven’t found it before lol. Going to have a look round that site now and see if I can find out what was going on in 1854 while my folks were there. You never know, they may get a mention lol. Cheers Rose |

Can you find her on a US census? This should give you a place of birth - or even an english census might. Sam x |

I have my grandmothers from USA so providing you know where she was born, it should be possible. They are great they have way more info on them than ours do. |
