Helen, thanks, will give it a look, have traced my paternal ancestors to Dursley area, so far back to the1790's. Peter, thankyou for the info, very interesting. Did google Independents and came up with a multitude of stuff, some of which was definitely not of a religious nature!

In English church history, Independents advocated local congregational control of religious and church matters, without any wider geographical hierarchy, either ecclesiastical or political. Independents reached particular prominence between 1642 and 1660 In the period of the English Civil War and of the Commonwealth and Protectorate, wherein the Parliamentary Army became the champion of Independent religious views against the Anglicanism or the Catholicism of Royalists and the Presbyterianism favoured by Parliament itself. The Congregationalist and Presbyterians eventually became the United Reform Church in 1972

I think the Independents later became called Congregationalists, but not quite certain.

Showing my ignorance again. I have the marriage cert of one of my G/Aunts that shows she was 'Married in the Independent Meeting according to the Rites etc of the Independents by certificate by me David G Truso minister. The event took place at Upper Cam, Dursley Gloucester 1895. Who or what were the Independents? I assume they were a non conformist group though I must confess to not coming across the name before. Can anybody enlighten me please?
