It happens a few times in my tree, both lines but mostly the Irish ones---If a child of the family dies a subsequent child of the same family is named after them-exactly! What must the second child have thought as it was growing up.eg. My G uncle Louie was named after his brother Louie who died aged 20+ a couple of years before he was born. It must feel really weird especially when the previous namesake died in adulthood and was being talked about!!! Not sure I like that naming tradition!!

Hi Carol They liked to pass the names on from one generation to another and perhaps the name would have died out if they hadn't given the name to that baby. Heather

I think I'd drop the name if I'd lost more than one with the name!!

I think it's an honour to be named after a loved one. My grans second name was after her grandmother. Maybe if I had started this hobby sooner, I'd have a daughter named Matilda...there again....maybe not lol Gerri.(Geraldine) PS my fathers name was Albert GERALD.

Mum always said it was unlucky to name a baby after someone who'd died recently. Heather

I have found this quite a lot. One of my sets of parents had three James's.

Hi all, I was named after my adopted Sister, she was born six years before me and circumstances meant that my Mum had to give her up for adoption and apparently, I looked like her. I don't think my Mum has ever made any comparisons though. x

Both sides of my family seemed to use the same name all the way through and to add confusion the men seemed to marry woman with the same names as their siblings !!! been pulling my hair out rying to trace them all ! Janine

I have also noticed this and there was an Alfred who died in one branch of my tree aged two, they named another child Alfred several years after his death and he too died aged 7, all of the other children lived, lesson learnt, dont call your child Alfred!!

This has happened a few times in my tree too and they are not of Irish descent. In fact on three occassions a third child has been named - suppose they thought third time lucky!!! Although you would think by then they wouldnt have risked it! Also I have uncles/aunts/nephews nieces/cousins named in exactly the same order but the birth dates are either a few years older or younger - Grrrr!!!
