Hi all, Thank you. Yes, there was a Jane in 1856 but she's not the one. I had tried variations of the surname. The Jane in Oldham, is it 1846? Why couldn't I find it!!! Thanks Helen for the reg district info. Not sure about the Jane Gaunt, Manchester. Will check it out. Thanks everyone. Cheers Margaret.

ASHTON & OLDHAM REGISTRATION DISTRICT Registration County : Lancashire. Created : 1.7.1837. Abolished : 1.4.1848 (divided into Ashton under Lyne and Oldham districts). Sub-districts : Ashton Town; Audenshaw; Chadderton; Crompton; Denton; Dukinfield; Hartshead; Knott Lanes; Middleton; Mottram; Newton; Oldham Above Town; Oldham Below Town; Royton; Stalybridge; Stayley So that should be the registration district in 1846 for Middleton

Thanks Glen, Couldn't understand why it wasn't there. Oldham are actually very good and most helpful with inquiries. Will have another go at Ancestry and see if it was registered later. Thanks. Cheers Margaret.

Hi Margaret, I was wondering whether your Jane Gant's entry could have been mistranscribed, and found a record of a Jane Gaunt death registered in Manchester registration district in the June quarter of 1846, ref. 20 527 on freebmd

It could be that the death wasn't registered,it did sometimes happen,or possibly registered much later than you might expect. It would be orth having another look at Ancestry, but you could try the local offices and see what they say. To find out which office try the Genuki website, and there are two threads you could try.(i'll give them a nudge) Local register offices don't always handle 'family history' enquiries. Glen

I have a burial, for Jane Gant age 50, 6th March 1846, from the Parish records in Middleton, Manchester, Lancs. I want to send for the death cert, but cannot find it on Ancestry to determine where the death would have been registered. Usually Oldham or Rochdale for Middleton, but it doesn't appear. Should I ring the reg offices and ask if they have it? Cheers Margaret.
