Does anyone know how I could get more information on 'Our Lady's Convent' Billinge, Chapel End (Near Wigan) - believed now closed? I have a relative (Irene Stokes) who died there on 3rd April 1921 aged just 6 years old and I wondered if there were any records that might suggest when she was placed in the orphanage. I've got her birth certificate and death certificate (hence I know her exact date and place of death) but I would like to be able to get some background information about her short life. I've tried Google and looked at the Billinge History website but the infomation about the convent is almost non-existant. |

Have you tried the local county records office? If they don't have the information, they might be able to point you in the right direction. Kath. x |

I live near London so a trip to the County Record Office in Lancashire is not really an option at this time (unfortunately!) |

Just give them a ring Tracy - at least they might be able to tell you if the records are there. Kath. x |
