Dear all can you help? I have an address in the 1891 and 1901 Census- Russell St, Bedford Beds, I can't find it on Street map or on Old-maps.co.uk Does anyone know what the street may be called now? I've found Clapham Rd which was the next street on the census, but struggling with Russell St . ( I'm trying to build a family tree map on Wayfaring) Many thanks Sharon

Well, it was still there when I bought my street map in the 1980's! It is in an area (off Clapham Road, as you say) where all the streets are named after Prime Ministers. But I am blowed if I can actually see it on the map! It is listed in the A-Z part which is how I know it was there. Sorry, got to go - back later. Kate.

This is driving me nuts! All I can think is that Russell Street may be that little bit without a name marked on it that is a continuation of Slade Walk, or that it was renamed, as you say (but if it had been renamed, why wouldn't it say that on my A-Z?) The only thing I could find on Google was the North End Working Men's Social Club is listed on 192 as Russell Street but it is an old link, and the address is now Roff Avenue. Russell Street is not on the current Post Office postcode list, as I'm sure you have already found out. I hope somebody sorts this out for you! If nobody on here can answer your question, try the Bedfordshire board on Rootschat (www.rootschat*com - replace * with .) Kate.

Thanks for the advice, both of you *hugs* I'll put a tempoary pin in the unnamed little street and also try rootsweb. If anyone wants help with odd central London streets please ask!

I used to live in Hartington Street just round the corner from Roff Avenue and the Working Mens Club. I am sure you are in the right area but there was a little bit of rebuilding around there and I think Russell Street must have been a casualty of that. Good hunting. Keith
