I've just had my first look through the A2A site & found loads of children 'apprenticed by parish at 7 years old to Mr .......' (or from 9) until aged 21.- early 1800's. Was this normal practice? Were these children 'sold'? - Sarah :-) |

Snowdrops in Bloom | Report | 1 May 2006 21:30 |
Sarah, I have seen references to workhouse children being 'bought' by mill masters so this could indeed happen. Snowdrops |

Good grief Snowdrops! Poor little blighters - ... bet that made them grow up fast! I found that many of the girls that were 'apprenticed' found their names as mother on bastardy orders later... Sarah :-i |

An Olde Crone | Report | 1 May 2006 22:21 |
Pauper's apprenticeships were for 14 years, not the normal seven. Isnt it ironic that this was going on even while middle-class England was patting itself on the back for being the first country in the world to abolish slavery. Olde Crone |

Terrible!, Olde Crone, I have a feeling that now I'm getting in to the feel of 'their' world with these records, they're more intimate than census & bmd (& IGI) which is all I've used 'til now. Obviously I'm going to be in for nasty surprises! Sarah :-) |

Wasn't Oliver Twist sold by Mr Bumble from the workhouse? |

Poor little blighters. One of mine was working as a servant in an inn at the age of 8. It can't have been far removed from slavery. I bet she had to sleep on the kitchen floor. |
