Hi I have found my gtgtgrandfathers family on the 1841 census. The family were spread out over Shoreditch and Ely in Cambridge. Unfortunately gtgtgf himself is no where to be found. He is by profession a police constable based in Shoreditch. My query is, if he were on duty on the date of the census, where would he be registered. Any advice would be appreciated. Regards Ericx |

Don't forget it was where you slept on the night of the census.......either at home, or in the police station (I would have thought!) The trouble is, so often people got missed off the census because it wasn't really clear where they were, or the form was filled in the day before (not allowed, but it probably happened a lot) For every person missing there is someone else entered twice!! But that's no help to you....................... Merry |

Hi Merry Thanks for your reply. I suspect he would have been registered at the local police station. but its finding it on the census thats the problem. Regards Ericx |

The pieces covering 668 Middlesex Parish: St LukeTownships: West Finsbury Golden-Lane/Old Street /Whitecross-Street are misssing, perhaps he was there. I am 99% certain my husband's mysterious Robins were there and I wouldn't mind betting that if your ancestor was on duty, he would be questioning the head of the household!!! |

Just as a though: have you checked out the old bailey site (nothing to do with censuses) but if he was a policeman in London around that time you might find him in some of the cases? Suzanne |

Hi Thanks for all your thoughts. He was a police constable in Shoreditch around this time. I have had a look at he Old Bailey site, but to no avail. I always thought Police stations, hospital, asylum, barracks, prison etc. came at the end of census under institutions. But as yet I have not come across where he could be at this time. Thanks once again to all. Ericx |

Eric I don't know about 1841 but in 1891 and 1901 police stations are in the census as they occur in the street, not in a separate entry. The census would list where people were on census night. Do you know which Met division he was in? nell |
