I suppose the best thing would be to eliminate 'Peter' by tracking him down on the 1881 census & the BMD. Then you'd know it was someone else. On the other hand, if you can't find him on either of those, it increases the possibility of it being Parkin. Something else to consider is that if he had been committed to the Lunatic Asylum, he would be listed only by his initials on the census, so you'd only be able to come up with possibles if the age & place of birth match. Is Parkin/Perkin a pet-version of Peter - (i.e. abbreviated Peterkin) as Robin is of Robert, for instance? Christine

This is possibly a red herring, but there is a Peter Hunter who is married, but living as a lodger at Front Street, Sacriston, Chester le Street on the 1891 census. He was a coal miner. Maybe he didn't use the name Parkin. Name: Peter Hunter Age: 27 Estimated birth year: abt 1864 Relation: Lodger Gender: Male Where Born: Sacriston, Durham, England Civil parish: Witton Gilbert Ecclesiastical parish: St Peter Town: Sacriston County/Island: Durham Country: England

Mabel was born in Shincliffe, Durham in 1871. Her parents were John Embleton from Newcastle and Jave Avery Stirrup, who in every census as an adult says she's from Borroughbridge in Yorkshire, but in every census as a child she is listed as born in Durham. Brenda

Carole- Thanks for that, I'd searched up to 1905! It's an odd name, so I bet it's him. From that I'll be bale to see who reported in and where they were living at the time. Phoenix- I'd considered they might have left the UK, but if they did, they left the kids behind. Alice Embleton got married in Chester le Street in 1911 and had my Grandma in 1912. Brenda

Hi Brenda Do you know anything more about Parkin from the family? Is it possible that he and Mabel take off into the sunset? Have you looked at the Canadian censuses or NSW indexes?

I haven't found him on the census records, but searched for his death, just in case he had already popped his clogs. Here he is (I think, as the area & age match) Deaths Mar 1907 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- HUNTER Parkin 43 Chester le S. 10a 364 Therefore, he is probably still in the area on the 1891 & 1901 censuses, just mis-transcribed. Will keep looking. Carole

I have a chap by the name of Parkin Hunter… should be easy to find you’d think, but no! He was born in Durham in either Edmondsley or Sacriston which is in the Chester le Street area in (abt) 1864. The last census I have him on is the 1881, at home with his family, aged 17. Family is Dorothy Hunter, head, 53, Benwell, NBL, brothers William, 22 and Thomas 19, both Lanchester. In 1888, Parkin married Mabel Embleton, who had a 4 month old daughter at that time, Alice Embleton. Alice never takes the Hunter name. In 1891 Mabel Hunter is listed as married, but is with her mothers family in Waldridge… head Jane A Embleton, 47, wid, and a whole bunch of brothers. Alice is there too. Mabel is listed as married. In 1901, Alice is still with her grandmother, Jane A Embleton, now in Edmondsley, with a couple of sons still at home. There is also another grand daughter, Martha, but as there is also another married daughter there, so I’m not sure if Martha is her daughter or Mabels. Mabel and Parkin Hunter are not to be found. So, what I’m looking for is Parkin Hunter in 1891 and both Parkin and Mabel Hunter in 1901! Hope you’re still with me! Thanks a bunch! Brenda
