Just received batch of certs, on one birth cert under the name, surname and maiden surname of mother it gives her name then Clay pipe maker. there is no fathers name and in the occupation of father box it is blank, do you think this is her occupation or is it the fathers occupation because it is usually the fathers occupation that is given. Many thanks for your replys to this question Vanda |

Hi Vanda When there is no father's name it usually means the child was illegitimate. What is the date of the cert? Would they be on a census? Heather |

Heather Sorry may have worded this thread a bit wrong i am just wondering about the occupation bit, it is under the mothers name not in the occupation part on the cert. I know that the child was born before they were married. thanks from Vanda |

Hi Vanda sorry to disappoint, but as Heather says, fathers box usually blank if illegitimate. I have one the same, that shows the mother and her occupation as Bakers Assistant - about 1855 (sorry don't have all info with me) Regards Looby |
