how do they know the right age ?

Hi i wonder if anyone could help me out. on all the census from 1881/91/01 my great grandads dob was 1850 on his marrigage cert in 1872 his age is given as 22 but when i have located his grave there was no headstone so i contacted the local cemetery office who told me he died 1915 aged 71. that would make his dob 1844. so how do the people who issue certs know which is the right dob. how can i find out ? the family are irish and trying to trace records is a nightmare love linda x |

Hi Linda - who reported the death? Whoever reported the death was the person who gave the information regarding his address and age. Maybe they didn't know him well - or perhaps they knew him so well that they were aware that for some reason he had taken a few years off his age. Information is only as good as the knowledge of the person who does the reporting. Victoria |

hi his death ref says 77 years old and i dont have his birth cert as he was born in galway in ireland and its been impossible to get any info on his family thanks linda x |
