I had a similar problem trying to trace a birth for my grandfather Benjamin Harley - I obtained marriage and death cert no problem but could not locate a birth for him in the indexes. So after several months tearing my hair out I concentrated on his siblings - with his brother it was the same scenario. I located a possible death for one of his sisters sent for the cert and BINGO. She had never been married but was formerly known as Hipwell and using that name I was able to find the births. Basically although the family were known as Harley (their mothers married name) their father was Ben Hipwell and they were registered as such. The ones that married stated their father as Ben Harley. There has been lots of searching for this family and there is no doubt that the Harley/Hipwells were one and the same. It may well be that this is not the case for your missing rellie - but food for thought anyway. |

Angela, any other info that you can add,put in the thread. I'm similiar to Tom,i have to hit the road early for an interview but can look tomorrow,if you can possibly give us any more info,or say which ones you have discounted. I did find some Dimonds originating from Ireland in the 1901 and several Arthurs come up,but can't help much at the minute. Glen |

Just had a thought - could he have lied about his age to sign up for the army? Got to go now but will look in the morning if noone has discovered him! |

Presumably you haven't been able to put the father and son together in the 1901.They may not have been in the same place at the time of the census. The middle name or initial isn't always recorded on the census either. What was the fathers occupation on Arthurs wedding cert, and where was the wedding. Glen |
