Before I subscribe, can someone tell me if you can do a general search please? I'm trying to find a Charles Skinner - mariner - who married in Littleham Devon in 1845 but inconveniently died sometime before the '51 census! I only have his name, no age (full doesn't count does it?) and the name of his father - also Charles, a carpenter. I've tried Devon and Cornwall on their online census but had no luck. Can I just put in a name? In desperation Lizzie

Lizzie, you can just do a general search but if you give me a rough birth year I can have a look for you. :-)

Lizzie Yes you can do a general search, but it doesn't guarantee success. Do you know where Charles was born? The census will only tell you if he was born in or out of county and not which town. If you post what info you have, I can look on 1841 for you. Sue

Hi Tom, That's very kind of you but I haven't a clue! He came, married and then died. Can't find his death so possibly at sea (if at all with the family record!) I only have his name from the marriage cert and childrens' birth certs. I was hoping that in 1841 he may have been living somewhere with father Charles. Lizzie

Christine, He had died by 1851. Census shows his widow Jane and two young children living back with her parents. Unless he was a bigamist...

Tom, Henry Charles in November 1845 and Sarah Jane in June 1847. Father's occupation mariner in both cases. Nothing to indicate he was dead by the birth of their second child although I do know that they sometimes forget to mention it!

It doesn;t - it was on the IGI - you could get a copy of the original entry and that should have a proffession.
