Hi I have my Great Grandfathers Birth Certificate : His name is George Richard Beech he was born on the 3rd July 1853 in Nantwich Cheshire his parents are listed as Thomas Beech and Ann Beech formerley Brown. Apart from the 1891/1901 Census when he was living with my Gt Grandmother Fanny I cannot trace him on any Census. He died in 1930 and according to the obituary notice which I have, he joined the 64th Reg of Foot NS on the 16/10/1871. So that explains why he was missing in 1881 but not where he was in 71or 61. I also can't find either his mother or father in 1851 or 1841. Anybody got any suggestions. Cheryl

Hi Glen It could be him, I did see that but how could I be sure??? He was a bit of a mystery man was George, and I know he lied you've only got to read the 1891/1901 Census to know that. Cheryl

The NS stands for Nova Scotia in Canada. The 64th (2nd Staffordshire) Regiment of Foot was stationed at Boston and at Halifax, Nova Scotia. It was a British army unit raised in 1756 to be the 2nd Battalion of the 11th Foot. It received the title 'Prince of Wales's' on occasion of the Prince's visit to Malta in 1876. Became the The Prince of Wales's North Staffordshire Regiment in 1881. Staffordshire Regiment Museum Whittington Barracks Lichfield Staffordshire WS14 9PY Tel: 01543 434394/434395 Fax: 01543 434391

Cheryl, having read your PM I think the NS is more likely to stand for North Staffordshire. The regiment was based in Nova Scotia at a much earlier period.
