Just found my first family in the Maidstone Union Workhouse, in the 1841, on the night the census was taken June 6th 1841. My great grandmother x3 with her children, including one I wasn't aware of in 1851? and still cannot find any more info on. I was hoping to discover her husband.......he, if he ever existed at all, still does not appear in 1841............... I now assume that I will have to presume, she might never have married at all........could have just given her five children her maiden name?? Jen

It's a distinct possibility. Can you find births for any of the children? I'm thinking, if she was in a workhouse - either there wasn't a husband, or he had died.

Orangeblossom.......... Yes I have found the youngest's birth and sent for the certificate, to try and confirm father's name and profession?? Still waiting for it to arrive. Jen

Don't know how long she/they spent in the workhouse Tracey, just states that they were there the night the census was taken. In 1851, they are elsewhere........possibly some form of rented accomodation. Jen

The older ones might be on the IGI. Have you looked there? That will (or not!) have both parents names too.

Yes I'm going to look there for the eldest, whom I never knew existed until now.............found no sign of others in past however. Jen
