I'm trying to find a record of my 3x gt grandfather's birth & parents. Thomas Jackson born 1806 in Kirkby Malzeard, Yorkshire. I have tried the familysearch website but couldn't find anything. Does anybody have any ideas where I could look next? Many thanks. Rgds, Joanna |

Hi Joanna For births before 1837 (civil registration) you would need to look at parish records, they are not as detailed as birth certs, but often give you a baptism date and possibly names of parents. Any idea where the birth was,do you have the family on a census? Glen |

For reference 1851 >>>> Thomas abt 1807 Kirkby Malzeard Head Margaret abt 1846 Kirkby Malzeard Daur Kendall abt 1843 Kirkby Malzeard Son Jane abt 1848 Kirkby Malzeard Daur >>>>>Ellen abt 1819 Kirkby Malzeard Wife Elizabeth abt 1840 Kirkby Malzeard Daur So you need to get the parish records for the marriage if pre 1837 or order a birth cert for one of the children, then you get maiden name of mother and names for fathers. I did check for a marriage to Ellen but came up with several possibles. Glen |

Not sure whether Glen has perhaps misunderstood your question, or perhaps I have, but if it is Thomas's birth you are trying to find, you would need to look in parish records for his baptism. It looks as though Kirkby Malzeard baptisms on the IGI (FamilySearch website) do not cover the period you would need to search, judging by the Hugh Wallis website, so you would need to go to the record office or library to look. The baptism entry should tell you at least one parent's name, but may not tell you both, and is not very likely to tell you the mother's maiden name, though you might get lucky. Kate. |

Many thanks to both Glen and Kim, it certainly gives me some places to investigate. Thanks again, Joanna |

Hi Joanna, For some reason GR won't let me reply on your Prussia thread so I'll leave it here - very confusing for those just skim reading! I seem to remember that in the BBC programme Who Do You Think You Are? Julian Clary's family originated in Prussia. I can't really remember any details and don't have the book, but someone else might have!! Might give some clues of where to look or addresses to write to. Good Luck! Kirby Malzeard should be a bit easier!! Jenny :-) |
