I have the names Lodovic and Ebenezer in my tree, both from Perthshire, does anyone know where these names originate from ? Also i have been told that Peter was a scottish varient for Patrick can anyone confirm or deny this for me ? Thanks, Debbie |

Ebenezer - biblical. Peter - biblical. (Padraig is the Irish language version, as is Patrick) LUdovic - norse,eastern european. Does that help? Olde Crone |

Well, I think it would be unusual! But who knows why people give their children the names they give them...they call them after their fathers, grandfathers, brothers, uncles, cousins, rich godparents, employers etc. Generally, and ONLY generally, you usually find an unusual name has some sort of significance to the family, certainly in those pre-popstar days! There was a brisk to and fro shipping and fishing movement between Scotland and the Norse countries, and also between Scotland and the eatern bloc - maybe an ancestor came from one of these places? Lodovic is a variant of Ludwig or Louis, I think. |
