Right I thought I knew, but wanted to google first (its a bad habit, but doesnt hurt anyone) The actual saying is 'Plain as a pikestaff' (Oh, I love being pedantic). pike - medieval weapon consisting of a spearhead attached to a long pole or pikestaff; superseded by the bayonet Well, I suppose if you had that thrust at you it would be pretty plain wouldnt it Gerri. |

Gerri, had a look but can't make it out. If you look down the page, there are a couple of others with the same profession. What did he do in 1851? |

Looks like shoemaker to me? It says Shoe m Jane snap - if you look down the image the whole street seems to be making shoes or putting them in boxes! |
