Right I thought I knew, but wanted to google first (its a bad habit, but doesnt hurt anyone) The actual saying is 'Plain as a pikestaff' (Oh, I love being pedantic). pike - medieval weapon consisting of a spearhead attached to a long pole or pikestaff; superseded by the bayonet Well, I suppose if you had that thrust at you it would be pretty plain wouldnt it Gerri.

Gerri, had a look but can't make it out. If you look down the page, there are a couple of others with the same profession. What did he do in 1851?

Looks like shoemaker to me? It says Shoe m Jane snap - if you look down the image the whole street seems to be making shoes or putting them in boxes!

my first thought was GROOM, but its not clear at all is it??? no got it now........ its shoe m ( they didn't write maker on any of them !!!)
