Well, it didn't look like Weeford, but there you go! |

I hadn't thought of looking at the next page, good idea. I've now discovered fom Genuki that there's a place nearby called Weeford, so I guess it must be Freeford in Weeford. What a delightful address... |

If you go to the next page of the census, there's more in the margin there too. I think its just to make clear which bit of Tamworth road these people are living in. It says 'Freeford in [whatever that bitis]ford'. nell |

It looks like 'Freeford in Theeford [not sure abt the Thee bit but 2nd bit of word is ford] se Reps letter' I don't have any idea what this means. But if there is a relevant letter it might be with the original census documents (ie at Kew) or perhaps a copy would be in the county records office. |

Alongside the entry in the 1871 census for Thomas Mallet, born 1819, his wife Matilda and daughters Caroline and Ellen, living in Tamworth Road, Lichfield, Staffs, there’s a handwritten comment that I can’t decipher. Thomas farmed in a hamlet called Freeford, called Fulfen Freeford in some documents, which was in or near Tamworth Road. I think his property was called Freeford Farm. The handwritten comment says something like “Free ford in …. see report – letter”. Can anyone decipher the rest of it, and suggest where I could get hold of the documents it refers to? |
