I have managed to get back to the late 1700 with my mothers side of the family. On the fathers side I have got to 1833 on the maternal line but on the paternal line I am well and truely stuck at 1898. I have the marriage cert for nan and granddad. 12th Dec 1898, St. Luje`s Church, in the parish of Victoria Docks in the county of West Ham and Essex. Granddad, John Maudsley`s father is first put in as George Massie, Baker...George is then crossed out, (He was granddads stepfather) and John Maudsley inserted. But the occupation was not changed it was left as Baker which I know George Massie was. I have tried looking for Granddads biological father, but John Maudsley is such a common name and I do not know granddads mother name to use as a cross reference. Granddad was born in Bootle, Liverpool in abt 1874. Any ideas as to where I go now will be very much appreciated. Kathlyn |

Have you got your grandfather's birth certificate and who is named as the father on that? Have you found John with George Massie on previous censuses? |

Hi Shirley, Yes thats the one. My problem is the change of surname, ie. Roberts to Maudesley. Because John did not get on with his stepfather George Massie, maybe that is why he used the name Maudesley in place of Roberts. But why, I keep asking my self. John ran away from home about 1889 and joined the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in Glasgow. George Massie found out where he was and hot footed to Glasgow and obtained Johns release as he was underage. On their return to Liverpool, John then took ship for Australia and was away for some 2 years. On the ships return to England it landed in the Royal group of docks in London, where he met grandmother and eventually married. Is this the time he changed his name, and if so why. I know the name of Maudesley and its variation spellings is a Lancashire name, and maybe that it why he chose it. He was very proud of Liverpool. George Massie did attend the wedding as his name is on the cert. as being...In the presence of...... I have written to the Scottish Regiment Historical Society in the hope that they can put me in touch with any record office there maybe as there could be a record of this occurance. Oh if only I had asked the right questions when they were all alive. Kathlyn |

Hi Jim Thanks for your hard work. The Massie census info I do have, and that is the very good clues to my granddad. If this John Roberts is my granddad why did he change his name to Maudesley. Do you have any thoughts on this please. Kathlyn and yes my surname is Maudesley |

Hi Kathlyn, As you said he ran away from home it could be that he changed his name in the hope that they would not find him. Fi. |

Hi Kathlyn I,ve pmd you in answer to your s. See tho you think that the ones on the 1891 are yours!! strange isnt it why he changed his name. I found the marriage of George to Mary Roberts this MAY give a clue. . George Massie married Mary Roberts June 1894 L,pool 8b 39 the cert may give more clues. wots the betting she was an unmarried mum but she knew who the father was ie John Maudesley thats why John junior decided to change his name later on. Thats my theory anyway. Shirley |
