Ages on 1841 census

Just for once I read some notes and this one caught my eye. People over 15 generally had their ages rounded down to the next 5 years, so if someone was 28 their age would be given as 25, if 33, then their age was given as 30. As if people didn't lie enough on their own without this eh! |

Yes and then some enumerators didn't bother with that rule at all and others rounded up instead of down!! Plus, it was the first time people had ever been asked how old they were, since the day they got married (when they probably lied anyway) Nightmare! Merry |

On the other hand, most of the people in my and my husband's trees that I can find are roughly the right age. Husband does have a gt gt gt auntie who only ages about 3 to 7 years per census though. She never married and I think she was a bit sensitive about being seen as an old maid! nell |
