Hi Could anybody advise me on where to start looking for immigration records. I am trying to find out when Albert Peterson came to England from Sweden. He was born 1852 in Sweden and married 1884 in England. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Elaine. |

Try the national archives. However my foreigners sneaked on in the country and never did anything official other than marry and have children. Was he a sailor and have you worked out where he came from? |

Yes he was a sailor from Monsteras in Sweden. On1901 census he is a British Subject. So I guess it must be recorded somewhere!! Regards Elaine |

For a brief period around the 1850's captains of ships were required to list the names of all foreign nationals arriving in British ports. These sheets are now held in the National Archives. However, the bad news is... there's thousands of them boxed in batches of 3 months and not indexed by name. I seached for my German ancestor and dozed off at the desk as I was on my fourth box. I woke up with a start as I snored loudly and found myself being glared at from all sides! |
