hi my husbands g/father was in the first world war and i've just being given his date of death 1918 he was in the royal engineers and on his head stone is the word sapper does anyone know what that means, and is there a sitethat i could look him up on thanks hazel. p.s. he was an irish man and is buried in waterford s/ ireland thanks hazel.

Sapper is the sort of rank for a private in the engineers I believe - they did a lot of excavating. Go to the National Archives site and you may be able to pick up his medals card.

Just googled this for you - ALWAYS search google for anything you dont know The term 'Sapper' is used to refer to a private soldier of the Corps of Royal Engineers. It was first introduced as a rank in 1856 and is given to soldiers when they enlist into the Corps. Sapper can also be used to refer to a member of the Royal Engineers regardless of rank.
