Hmmmm, well the Harvey witnesses are most likely my relations, but which ones might be hard to work out!! (I am related to large chunks of Weymouth, Melcombe Regis and Wyke Regis!) I am wondering about this....... IGI: CAROLINE DAVIS <HILL> Christening: 28 JUL 1833 Portland, Dorset, England Parents: Father: RICHARD GEORGE HILL Mother: ELIZABETH Messages: Extracted birth or christening record for the locality listed in the record. and IGI: Frances Maria Hill Christening: 16 AUG 1835 Fleet, Dorset, England Parents: Father: Richard Hill Mother: Elizabeth Messages: Extracted birth or christening record for the locality listed in the record. And 1841 census....Falmouth Town Union Workhouse: Caroline Hill abt 1832 Falmouth Cornwall (b out of County) Fanny Hill abt 1834 Falmouth Cornwall (b out of County) Charles Hill abt 1836 Cornwall, England Falmouth Cornwall (b in County - a mistake or is the later census a mistake??) Hi All, My wife's ggg-grandfather was William Charles Hill. He is on the 1871 census as follows: 1871 Census: RG10/2293-80 Falmouth, 15 Killigrew St., Charles Hill, head, mar, 34, mariner, Weymouth Falmouth, 15 Killigrew St., Nancy Hill, wife, mar, 32, Constantine and three children. He should be on each of the 1841, 1851 & 1861 censuses but cannot be found. His marriage certificate states: 27 Jun 1865, William Charles Hill, bachelor mariner (full age) married Nancy Polkinghorne, spinster (full age). Parents: Richard George Hill (mariner), William Polkinghorne (labourer) according to the rites and ceremonies of the Catholic Church after Banns. Witnesses: William Pascol, William Reed. [typed certificate] The Dorset OPC site has provided me with: William Charles Hill; son of Richard George (mariner) & Elizabeth Hill was baptised 14 Jan 1838 Also with: Marriage: 30 Mar 1826; Richard George HILL (Bachelor) & Elizabeth TALBOT (Spinster); Banns - Witnesses: Mary Harvey & Henry Harvey But, as I said, no sign of any of these in 1841, 1851 or 1861. So between Jan 1838 and Jun 1841 they go missing and then William Charles reappears in Cornwall in 1871. I have read that emigrations from Dorset - largely to New Zealand and Australia - started in 1837. How do I start investigating what happened to this family?? Many thanks for reading all this!! Kind regards, William |
